Algiers, Algeria | November 26th, 2024 — Algeria stands as a global powerhouse in date production, yet its vast wealth of over 400 distinct varieties remains largely unknown to its own citizens. Far from being merely a traditional fruit, dates have evolved into a multifaceted economic asset, finding their way into products as diverse as natural fertilizers, animal feed, jams, syrups, honey, chocolate, coffee, and vinegar. This remarkable versatility, coupled with their role in barter trade with neighboring African countries, underscores the strategic importance of the date industry for Algeria’s sustainable economy. The pressing need to organize, innovate, and elevate this sector to international prominence was vividly demonstrated at the recently concluded Second International Date Expo, held at the SAFEX Exhibition Palace in Algiers.
The event, held under the theme “Our Dates: Authenticity and Sustainable Economy,” brought together over 180 exhibitors, including farmers, exporters, artisans, and international participants from countries like Tunisia, Libya, and Turkey. The exposition showcased Algeria’s unmatched diversity in date production, with varieties unique to each region and tailored to specific health and culinary needs. Yet, it also highlighted the challenges faced by producers, particularly in marketing these treasures to domestic and global markets.
“Tinatboudet” and “Tennissine”: Hidden Gems of the Algerian South
Visitors to the M’Ghir district pavilion were astonished to discover 165 types of dates, a mere fraction of the region’s total 400 varieties. Among the highlights were “Tinatboudet,” a black date celebrated for its rich flavor and superior nutritional benefits, often compared to Saudi Arabia’s famed Ajwa dates, and “Tennissine,” a premium variety commanding high demand. Prices ranged from 150 to 700 Algerian dinars per kilogram, reflecting the diversity in quality and demand.
Innovative Derivatives: Date Vinegar, Coffee, and Natural Remedies
The ingenuity of Algerian producers was on full display at the event. Cooperative farms introduced date vinegar as a new product poised for market entry, while date seed coffee—a 100% natural and caffeine-free alternative—captured significant attention for its health benefits. Artisanal producers also showcased medicinal herbs, such as Neem, a powerful insect repellent and natural remedy for scalp conditions.
Scientific Innovations: Transforming Waste into Wealth
The Scientific and Technical Research Center for Arid Regions in Biskra unveiled groundbreaking advancements, including a patented animal feed made from date waste and a biochar fertilizer derived from palm fronds. These innovations not only promote sustainability but also address the rising costs of imported feed and fertilizers. The center has already initiated partnerships with private investors, highlighting the transformative potential of scientific research in the agricultural sector.
Global Aspirations: The Untapped Export Power of Algerian Dates
Leading exporters like the Mourouj Company emphasized Algeria’s comparative advantage in the global market. Varieties such as Deglet Nour have found eager buyers in Russia, France, and Spain, yet inconsistent pricing and limited marketing strategies hinder broader export success. The lack of customs and tax incentives for exporters further stifles growth, despite global recognition of Algerian dates as superior to their Gulf counterparts.
Digital Platforms: Bridging the Market Gap
Digital innovators like Mohamed Mouffak are addressing these challenges by creating online platforms to market Algerian date derivatives, from flavored date sugar to date-infused chocolate. These initiatives aim to connect producers with consumers, leveraging Algeria’s reputation for natural, chemical-free products to penetrate new markets.
A Call to Action: Organizing for a Thriving Future
The Second International Date Expo underscored the urgency of enhancing Algeria’s date industry through improved organization, international marketing strategies, and government support. With proper investment in infrastructure, digital marketing, and export incentives, Algerian dates could become a leading source of foreign currency, second only to hydrocarbons. As one exhibitor aptly put it, “Algerian dates are a treasure waiting to be unlocked, and the world is ready to embrace them.”
By embracing this vision, Algeria can transform its date industry into a global powerhouse, honoring its agricultural heritage while securing a prosperous and sustainable future.
