Algerian Diaspora in the UK Calls for New Air Routes: London to Constantine, London to Oran

Algiers, Algeria | January 27th, 2025 — The Algerian diaspora in the United Kingdom has issued a passionate plea to the Algerian government, particularly to the national airline, Air Algérie, to establish two new direct air routes linking London with the cities of Constantine in eastern Algeria and Oran in the west.
This request comes in response to the increasing need for enhanced air connectivity between Algeria and the United Kingdom, driven by the growing Algerian population in the UK. The community has expressed dissatisfaction with the current limited options, which are confined to the London-Algiers route. This restriction imposes significant logistical and financial burdens on travelers, particularly those heading to Algeria’s eastern and western regions.
Members of the diaspora emphasized that the establishment of the proposed routes would profoundly ease travel for families, students, and businesspeople, while simultaneously strengthening cultural and economic exchanges between the two nations.
Numerous community members have reached out to Algeria Press Online to share their concerns and aspirations. One representative of the diaspora remarked, “We are struggling with the lack of direct flight options to Algeria’s major cities beyond Algiers. Opening new routes to Constantine and Oran will alleviate the strain on travelers and strengthen ties between the community and their homeland.”
The representative further highlighted the potential economic benefits of this initiative for Air Algérie, noting that the rising demand for travel between the UK and Algeria’s major urban hubs presents an opportunity for the airline to expand its market and boost profitability.
In this vein, the diaspora urged Algerian authorities to seriously consider their appeal and prioritize the needs of their citizens abroad. They believe that the introduction of these new routes would not only ease travel but also underscore the government’s commitment to supporting the aspirations of its expatriate communities.
“This initiative is not just about convenience,” added another community member. “It’s about reinforcing the bond between Algerians living abroad and their homeland. It’s also an acknowledgment of the significant contributions the diaspora makes to Algeria, both economically and culturally.”
