Algiers, Algeria | December 15th, 2024 — In a series of high-level diplomatic missions across Africa, Algeria has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing bilateral relations with key African nations. Under the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf has successfully delivered messages from the President to the leaders of Angola, Uganda, and Burundi, marking a critical step in Algeria’s strategy to foster deeper ties with the continent. This outreach, which aligns with Algeria’s broader foreign policy objectives, underscores the nation’s pivotal role in shaping regional cooperation and solidarity.

Algeria’s Diplomatic Initiatives: A Renewed Focus on Africa

The latest diplomatic moves are part of Algeria’s ongoing efforts to assert itself as a key player in African politics. During his African tour, Minister Attaf met with Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço in Luanda, where he conveyed President Tebboune’s greetings and discussed expanding the bilateral relationship. Their meeting touched on critical aspects of cooperation, including Algeria’s support for Angola’s leadership within the African Union. The two leaders explored ways to inject new energy into their partnership, with a focus on mutual economic interests and solidarity within the context of the Union.

In Uganda, Attaf met with President Yoweri Museveni, where the two leaders reflected on the fruitful outcomes of their prior engagements, including the significant agreements reached during Museveni’s state visit to Algeria in 2023. They also discussed pressing regional matters such as the situation in Palestine and the ongoing decolonization efforts in Western Sahara, issues that remain central to Africa’s collective diplomatic stance.

The diplomatic momentum continued in Burundi, where Attaf was welcomed by President Evariste Ndayishimiye. Here, discussions focused on enhancing Algeria-Burundi relations, particularly in areas of economic cooperation and regional security. Ndayishimiye shared his vision for their shared future, with an emphasis on transforming both nations into emerging economies and driving sustainable development.

In parallel with these diplomatic efforts, Algeria has also engaged with Burkina Faso, where Secretary of State for African Affairs, Selma Bakhta Mansouri, met with President Ibrahim Traore. Mansouri conveyed President Tebboune’s message of solidarity, reaffirming Algeria’s readiness to support Burkina Faso in its fight against terrorism and efforts to maintain stability in the Sahel region.

A Vision for Unity and Stability in Africa

Algeria’s diplomatic outreach reflects a clear vision for the future—one that prioritizes unity, stability, and sustainable development for African nations. By strengthening relationships with key countries across the continent, Algeria aims to contribute to Africa’s collective prosperity while positioning itself as a leading advocate for peace and security. Through these strategic engagements, Algeria is not only reinforcing its historical ties but also shaping the future of Africa’s geopolitical landscape.
