Algerian Diplomacy’s Skillfulness Leads to UN Security Council Resolution on Gaza

ALGIERS- The adoption of a resolution by the UN Security Council regarding Palestine marks a significant diplomatic achievement, notably without the threat of a veto. Spearheaded by the Group of Ten (E10), including Algeria, this initiative reflects the adeptness of Algerian diplomacy in rallying support among both permanent and elected members of the council.
The resolution, which calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the duration of Ramadan, signals a critical step towards ending nearly six months of genocidal aggression by the Zionist entity against the Palestinian population in the enclave. The collaborative efforts of the E10, coupled with bilateral discussions between Algerian diplomatic delegations in New York and officials in Algeria, notably Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf, and his American counterpart Antony Blinken, underscore the meticulous coordination behind this diplomatic maneuver.
The adoption of the resolution, with 14 votes in favor and one abstention, notably from the United States, signifies a potential shift in American policy. While the US traditionally exercised its veto power to block resolutions critical of the Zionist entity, this abstention may signal growing discontent with Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s belligerent stance, which has increasingly alienated Western allies.
Moreover, the European Union has adopted a more assertive stance, with calls to cease all cooperation with Netanyahu’s government and impose sanctions to compel compliance with international decisions, including a sustainable ceasefire.
The recent telephone conversation between Minister Ahmed Attaf and Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlights the pivotal role of diplomatic engagement in shaping international consensus on critical issues such as the Gaza conflict. Their exchange underscores the shared commitment to achieving a lasting and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza.
China’s endorsement of the resolution, following its veto of a previous American proposal, underscores the international community’s growing consensus on the urgency of the Gaza crisis. The Chinese spokesperson’s commendation of Algeria and other Arab nations for their diligent efforts reflects the collaborative spirit driving this diplomatic endeavor.
