Algiers, Algeria | February 20th, 2025 — The Algerian Economic Renewal Council (CREA) has officially launched, for the second consecutive year, an ambitious initiative to reduce the prices of widely consumed goods during the holy month of Ramadan. The program, which encompasses over 880 essential products, is a direct response to the government’s ongoing efforts to stabilize market prices and ease the financial burden on Algerian households.
The announcement was made during a press conference held on Thursday, presided over by CREA President Kamel Moula, in the presence of Minister of Trade and Market Regulation Tayeb Zitouni, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries Youssef Cherfa, as well as representatives from professional organizations and numerous economic operators.
Under the slogan “Economically Patriotic, Socially United”, this initiative seeks to reinforce national economic solidarity and provide sustainable solutions for market stabilization. Speaking on the occasion, Moula emphasized that this endeavor aligns with the broader objective of the Ministry of Trade to ensure an abundant supply of essential goods at reduced prices throughout Ramadan.
Moula highlighted the remarkable success of last year’s initiative and underscored the expansion of this year’s participation base to include a broader spectrum of enterprises, whether affiliated with CREA or otherwise. He stated that this expansion signifies a growing commitment within the Algerian business community to actively contribute to economic and social stability.
“This initiative should not be viewed as an exceptional measure but rather as a sustainable practice,” Moula asserted. “Corporate commitment must be seen as a responsibility toward the citizen, not a mere choice. By fostering such initiatives, we are actively contributing to market stability, protecting purchasing power, and ensuring the well-being of families.”
Comprehensive Legal Framework to Enhance Market Regulation
Minister of Trade and Market Regulation Tayeb Zitouni commended the voluntary participation of economic operators, stressing that their involvement reflects a deep sense of economic nationalism and solidarity with consumers. He pointed out that the initiative covers an extensive range of products, demonstrating a significant commitment from the business sector to mitigating the financial strain on households.
Zitouni also reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring a stable and well-regulated market during Ramadan, highlighting the nationwide establishment of nearly 600 neighborhood markets to facilitate direct access to essential goods at affordable prices. He called on businesses to enhance their participation in these markets to ensure smooth and consistent market supply throughout the holy month.
Furthermore, the minister announced that his department is in the process of finalizing a series of new regulatory texts aimed at structuring the national market and organizing value chains. These legal measures, expected to be enacted after Ramadan, are designed to eliminate supply shortages and curb price fluctuations that occasionally impact specific products.
Additionally, Zitouni disclosed that directives have been issued to regional trade directors to enhance coordination with their counterparts in the agricultural and industrial sectors. This cross-sectoral collaboration aims to ensure uninterrupted supply chains and prevent any market disruptions.
Agricultural Sector’s Role in Ensuring Market Stability
Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries Youssef Cherfa welcomed the initiative, emphasizing its role in safeguarding purchasing power and guaranteeing the availability of a diverse range of products at competitive prices. He highlighted the proactive efforts of the agricultural sector, noting that preparations for Ramadan had commenced nearly four months in advance to ensure sufficient production and supply.
Cherfa urged all stakeholders to intensify their collaboration in order to strengthen the resilience of the national market. “Ensuring food security and market stability is a collective responsibility. It requires synergy between government institutions, economic operators, and consumers,” he stated.
