ALGIERS- Mohamed Boutabba, the General Director of the Algerian Energy Company, unveiled plans for the completion of an urgent initiative aimed at seawater desalination, which encompasses the establishment of 11 stations. Five of these stations are presently under construction, each boasting a capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day. Additionally, six additional stations are slated for development, with the overarching goal of achieving a coverage rate of 60% and attaining self-sufficiency in the realm of water resources.

In an interview with Algerian radio, Boutabba outlined the company’s future trajectory, envisioning a total production capacity of 3.6 million cubic meters per day upon the completion of a network totaling 19 seawater desalination stations.

He further noted that the company, a subsidiary of the Sonatrach Group, has opted to collaborate with Algerian institutions to ensure full local supply, including engaging a startup enterprise specializing in seawater desalination equipment. A dedicated team comprising engineers and technicians has been entrusted with the operation and maintenance of the five desalination stations.

Emphasizing the significance of training within the seawater desalination sector, Boutabba highlighted plans to integrate industry standards and scientific knowledge related to advanced technologies, along with providing hands-on training opportunities. These initiatives are set to be implemented in Algerian universities in coordination with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, as well as through training centers in partnership with the Ministry of Vocational Training and Education.
