Algerian FM Attaf Engages in Talks with Egyptian Counterpart to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

Algiers, Algeria | July 6th, 2024 — The Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, engaged in a telephone conversation with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdel Aty, on Saturday. This discussion, as reported in a ministry communiqué, focused on enhancing the fraternal relations and cooperation between Algeria and Egypt across various sectors.
During the conversation, Minister Attaf extended his heartfelt congratulations to Badr Abdel Aty on his recent appointment as the head of Egyptian diplomacy. Following this, the two ministers explored ways to bolster cooperation in alignment with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his Egyptian counterpart, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi.
Emphasizing the importance of leveraging the vast economic potentials of both nations, the ministers agreed on the necessity of activating the Grand Joint Commission. They committed to setting a date for its next meeting at the earliest opportunity to ensure continued progress in their collaborative efforts.
Furthermore, the ministers concurred on the need to enhance coordination on key priorities at both the Arab and African levels. This includes a focus on the Palestinian cause, the situation in the brotherly nation of Libya, and stability in the Sahel-Saharan region, as highlighted in the communiqué.
Recently, a meeting was held in Algiers to boost bilateral relations between Algeria and Egypt, signaling a significant step forward in economic collaboration. Yasser Qarani, Minister Plenipotentiary and Head of the Commercial Office at the Egyptian Embassy in Algeria, announced that multiple Egyptian companies are keen to establish factories in Algeria. These investments are particularly targeted at the packaging, synthetic fibers, and agro-food industries, which are seen as mutually beneficial sectors that can enhance production capabilities and economic ties between the two nations. Qarani emphasized the importance of these investments for local employment and technological transfer, marking a new phase of cooperation. The current Egyptian investments in Algeria, amounting to nearly USD 3 billion across various sectors, underscore the depth of the economic relationship between the two countries.
The meeting also highlighted the ambitious goals for the future, with bilateral trade having surged from USD 600 million to USD 1 billion over the past five years. Both countries aim to elevate this figure to USD 5 billion in the coming four years, focusing on key areas such as the agro-food industries, automotive-related sectors, and renewable energies. In addition to industrial investments, discussions are underway for collaboration in Algeria’s gas sector, reflecting shared strategic interests and complementing existing economic partnerships. The strong bilateral relations, reinforced by reciprocal visits and high-level delegations, are expected to drive economic growth and mutual prosperity for both nations.
