Algiers, September 13, 2023 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, engaged in a crucial telephone conversation on Wednesday with his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani. The discussion revolved around the pressing issues of the Sahel region, particularly focusing on the political solutions, peace in Mali, and the challenges posed by irregular migration in the Mediterranean, according to a press release from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the conversation, Mr. Attaf took the opportunity to highlight the positive reactions garnered by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s initiative for the political settlement of the crisis in Niger. “The international community continues to react positively to President Tebboune’s initiative,” said Mr. Attaf. This initiative aims to bring stability and peace to Niger and has been warmly received by various stakeholders.

In response, Italian Minister Antonio Tajani reaffirmed Italy’ steadfast support for pursuing political solutions to the Sahel crisis. Minister Tajani went a step further by emphasizing the need for an international conference on development in the Sahel. This conference, if organized, could provide a platform for nations to collaborate on long-term strategies to promote growth, stability, and prosperity in the Sahel region.

The conversation also addressed the deteriorating situation in Mali. Both ministers shared a common perspective on the urgent necessity of revitalizing the implementation of the Agreement on peace and reconciliation in Mali, which originated from the Algiers process. The peace agreement is seen as a vital framework for resolving the ongoing conflict in Mali and restoring peace and stability to the country.

Concluding the discussion, Minister Attaf and Minister Tajani turned their attention to the escalating issue of irregular migratory flows in the Mediterranean. They engaged in a comprehensive exchange of views and analyses on this matter, underscoring the importance of cooperation and coordinated efforts to address the challenges posed by irregular migration.

The telephone conversation between Minister Attaf and Minister Tajani underscores the commitment of Algeria and Italy to collaborate on finding solutions to the complex and interconnected challenges facing the Sahel region. Both nations have expressed their support for political solutions, an international development conference, and renewed efforts to achieve peace in Mali. Additionally, their shared concern for addressing irregular migration in the Mediterranean reflects their dedication to regional stability and cooperation in the face of pressing issues.
