Algiers, Algeria | December 16th, 2024 — In a significant step towards bolstering bilateral relations, Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, held discussions with his Ethiopian counterpart, Gedion Timotheos, on Monday in Addis Ababa. The meeting was part of Attaf’s official visit to Ethiopia, undertaken in his capacity as the Special Envoy of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, according to a statement released by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The high-level talks focused on revitalizing Algerian-Ethiopian relations, with particular emphasis on the upcoming meeting of the Algerian-Ethiopian High Joint Commission. Both sides explored mechanisms to inject new momentum into their partnership, prioritizing the enrichment and modernization of the bilateral legal framework. Discussions also centered on advancing economic cooperation, recognizing its pivotal role in deepening ties between the two nations.

Attaf and Timotheos also exchanged views on critical issues currently under discussion within the African Union (AU), reflecting their shared commitment to fostering unity and sustainable development across the continent. This dialogue is part of Algeria’s proactive efforts to strengthen its diplomatic footprint in Africa under the leadership of President Tebboune.

Strengthening Algerian-Ethiopian Relations: A New Era of Connectivity and Collaboration

Algerian-Ethiopian relations have been grounded in decades of mutual respect and shared interests. Diplomatic ties between the two nations were established in the 1960s, and since then, they have forged a strong partnership, particularly within the African Union (AU). Their collaboration has been focused on promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development across Africa. Both countries have consistently supported each other in various global forums, advocating for a united African front to tackle the continent’s challenges.

In recent years, Algeria and Ethiopia have taken significant steps to expand their political and economic ties. The two countries have entered into numerous agreements to enhance trade relations, cultural exchange, and technical cooperation. Algeria, with its strategic position in North Africa, and Ethiopia, a key player in East Africa, have shared objectives to foster closer interregional connections and bolster African unity.

The recent launch of a direct flight between Algiers and Addis Ababa represents a major advancement in their bilateral relations. This new air route, initiated by Air Algérie, is expected to increase trade, improve access for tourism, and foster economic partnerships between the two nations.

The direct flight also provides an opportunity for Algerian and Ethiopian businesses to collaborate more effectively. With Algeria’s rich natural resources and expanding industrial sector, paired with Ethiopia’s agricultural strength and rapidly growing economy, the potential for fruitful commercial exchanges is immense.

This step is in line with both countries’ broader vision of a more integrated African market and enhanced regional cooperation. The direct air link between Algiers and Addis Ababa opens up new possibilities for economic growth, regional development, and deeper diplomatic relations.
