Algerian FM Attaf Meets Mauritanian Special Envoy to Strengthen Bilateral Relations and Discuss Regional Issues

Algiers, Algeria | February 6th, 2025 — On Thursday, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf held an official meeting with Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, Mauritania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, who is in Algeria as a special envoy of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. The discussions marked a significant step in further enhancing the robust diplomatic ties between Algeria and Mauritania, reinforcing the shared goals of cooperation and regional solidarity.

The talks focused on ways to maintain and expand the momentum of positive bilateral relations between the two countries, which are guided by the directives of their respective leaders, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria and President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani of Mauritania. Both ministers expressed a mutual commitment to continuing the cooperation that has flourished in recent years, emphasizing the brotherly and complementary nature of the relationship.

According to a statement from Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the conversation also covered pressing regional matters, particularly the developments concerning the Palestinian cause, a subject of deep concern to both nations. Attaf and Ould Merzoug reiterated their commitment to supporting the Palestinian people’s rights and advancing the issue on the international stage.

Additionally, the ministers addressed key African matters, notably the upcoming summit of the African Union (AU), where the presidency of the Union will transition from Mauritania to Angola. The handover, scheduled for mid-February in Addis Ababa, will be a critical point of discussion as both Algeria and Mauritania aim to collaborate on pivotal continental issues within the AU framework.

This meeting exemplified the strong diplomatic ties between Algeria and Mauritania, reaffirming their shared interests in peace, stability, and development in the Arab and African regions.
