Algiers, Algeria | May 24, 2024 — On a mission from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf was received by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. According to a communiqué from the ministry, the meeting took place as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Attaf delivered a handwritten letter from President Tebboune to President Faye. The letter emphasized Tebboune’s desire to inject new dynamism into the relationship between Algeria and Senegal.
“The minister conveyed the distinguished greetings of President Tebboune to his Senegalese counterpart and a letter in which he underscored his wish to bring new momentum to the relations between the two countries,” the communiqué stated.
The discussion also covered the historical ties between Algeria and Senegal, exploring ways to deepen these connections. Both parties expressed a mutual interest in enhancing their relationship.
Addressing Regional Challenges
Attaf and President Faye also discussed the current situation in the Sahel-Saharan region, focusing on peaceful solutions to crises that threaten the area’s security and stability.
“The goal is to realize the interest shown by both presidents in deepening relations between Algeria and Senegal. The officials also discussed developments in the Sahel-Saharan zone and the prospects for peaceful solutions to the crises threatening the security and stability of this space,” the communiqué added.
President Faye expressed his greetings to President Tebboune and his commitment to furthering bilateral relations and addressing regional peace and development issues.
Shared Challenges and Cooperation
During a press conference held alongside the meeting, Minister Attaf highlighted President Tebboune’s commitment to Algerian-Senegalese relations: “President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is particularly attentive to Algerian-Senegalese relations and is especially concerned with their content and substance. President Tebboune also emphasizes the need for sustained, regular political consultation between our two countries as we face the same challenges in all our shared areas of belonging.”
Minister Attaf reiterated Algeria’s support for Senegal, stressing the importance of legal frameworks and prioritizing fields of action to maximize cooperation benefits: “Algeria intends to stand by Senegal, deepening our cooperation within agreed timelines for better legal frameworks and identifying priority action fields that best leverage the existing cooperation potentials between our two countries,” he added.
This visit and the discussions held underscore the commitment of both Algeria and Senegal to strengthening their bilateral ties and collaboratively addressing regional challenges.
