Algerian FM Attaf’s visit to Brazzaville reaffirms commitment to expanding strategic partnerships across key sectors, enhancing African solidarity

Algiers, Algeria | January 09th, 2025 —  Algeria and the Republic of the Congo have taken significant strides towards strengthening their diplomatic and cooperative ties, following a meeting between Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf and Congolese President Denis Sassou N’Guesso in Brazzaville. Attaf, acting as a special envoy of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, delivered a formal letter reaffirming Tebboune’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations and enhancing African solidarity.

The high-level meeting reviewed the progress made in Algerian-Congolese cooperation, following agreements reached during the leaders’ summit in Algiers in July 2022. Key areas of collaboration discussed included defense, energy, mining, air transport, trade, and higher education, reflecting the mutual interest in expanding strategic partnerships across vital sectors.

Attaf commended the quality of Algeria-Congo relations, describing them as “excellent” and promising further developments. He announced the planned reopening of the air route between Algiers and Brazzaville, emphasizing its role in facilitating economic and cultural exchanges. “We aim to inject new momentum into our trade relations,” Attaf stated, highlighting ongoing consultations between the relevant ministries.

The visit also served as a platform for discussing critical continental issues, particularly Libya’s prolonged crisis. Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s support for President Sassou N’Guesso’s efforts as head of the African Union’s High-Level Committee on Libya. He stressed the importance of a Libyan-led reconciliation process, the need for inclusive national dialogue, and the cessation of foreign interventions, which he described as exacerbating the situation.

President Tebboune’s message also underscored Algeria’s commitment to strengthening African representation on the global stage. Topics included African Union reforms, the enhancement of Africa’s position within the UN Security Council, improved African involvement in global financial institutions, and the continent’s representation in the G20.

Attaf’s meeting with his Congolese counterpart, Jean-Claude Gakosso, further reinforced the two countries’ shared vision for Africa’s collective advancement. The discussions focused on sustaining positive diplomatic momentum and aligning strategies for upcoming African Union engagements.

During the press briefing, Attaf praised the historical depth of Algeria-Congo relations, emphasizing their “distinguished and promising” nature. He highlighted the steady progress in energy, geology, and regional cooperation while advocating for a more dynamic trade partnership.

The visit marked another milestone in Algeria’s proactive diplomatic agenda, showcasing the nation’s dedication to both bilateral cooperation and broader African unity. As both countries continue to foster mutual growth and stability, this diplomatic mission stands as a testament to Algeria’s unwavering support for continental development and conflict resolution.
