Algiers, Algeria | February 2nd, 2025 — The Algerian Football Federation (FAF), under the leadership of its president Walid Sadi, reaffirmed its strategic objectives for the national team and the country’s return to the highest echelons of African and international football governance. Speaking on the sidelines of the General Assembly held on Saturday at the National Army Club in Beni Messous, Sadi detailed Algeria’s ambitions for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, and its bid to regain influence within the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee.
Betting on Betković: A Clear Roadmap to the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Sadi emphasized that the foremost objective for head coach Vladimir Betković is to secure Algeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He stated unequivocally, “The primary and essential goal for Vladimir Betković is to lead Algeria to the World Cup finals.” Addressing the national team’s preparations for AFCON 2025, Sadi stressed that FAF is awaiting CAF’s confirmation of the tournament schedule before finalizing discussions with Betković regarding a comprehensive preparation plan and specific objectives for the continental competition.
A Competitive AFCON Group: The Road to Redemption
Algeria finds itself in a balanced group alongside Burkina Faso, Sudan, and Equatorial Guinea for AFCON 2025. Sadi recognized the challenge ahead while maintaining confidence in the national team’s ability to progress beyond the group stage. “The draw has placed us in a competitive group. Today, African football has evolved—there are no small or big teams anymore,” he noted. Sadi further acknowledged Algeria’s recent AFCON struggles, stating, “In our last two appearances, we failed to advance past the group stage. We must work with composure, qualify for the Round of 16, and then approach the tournament match by match.”
Algeria’s Return to CAF’s Executive Committee: A Strategic Priority
One of FAF’s principal objectives under Sadi’s tenure is to restore Algeria’s presence in the executive structures of African football. “One of my main goals since assuming leadership has been Algeria’s return to international football institutions. We are on the right path to regaining a seat on the CAF Executive Committee,” he declared. Sadi underscored the significance of Algeria’s infrastructural advancements in strengthening its candidacy, affirming, “Given the world-class sports facilities we now possess, it is imperative that Algeria reclaims its position within African football’s governing bodies.”
Financial Resurgence: A Stabilized FAF with a Strong Fiscal Outlook
During the General Assembly, Sadi provided a comprehensive overview of FAF’s financial situation, highlighting a remarkable turnaround. “The General Assembly was conducted in a calm atmosphere, with unanimous approval of the financial and administrative reports after a year filled with positive developments,” he stated. He further revealed that FAF has achieved a financial surplus, saying, “The financial indicators are highly positive, with a surplus that ensures we can operate with considerable ease in the coming years.”
Unwavering Government Support: A Key Pillar in FAF’s Success
Sadi took a moment to acknowledge the unwavering support of Algeria’s highest authorities, particularly President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. “We must recognize and appreciate the steadfast backing of the country’s leadership, especially President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has played a crucial role in supporting the federation. Thanks to his commitment, we have successfully implemented our strategic roadmap,” Sadi affirmed. He recalled the dire financial situation FAF faced upon his election in September 2023 and credited the government’s intervention for facilitating the federation’s recovery, culminating in a financial surplus of 450 billion centimes, as per FAF’s latest financial report.
A Tribute to Algerian Football Legends
As part of the General Assembly proceedings, FAF honored iconic figures who have left an indelible mark on Algerian football. Former MC Alger players Ali Bencheikh and Omar Betrouni, along with ex-USM Alger president Saïd Allik, received special recognition and were presented with jerseys featuring Algeria’s traditional Zellige patterns. Additionally, veteran journalist Abdelaziz Zouaoui and former CR Belouizdad and national team player Mokhtar Kallem were also celebrated for their contributions to Algerian football.
