ALGIERS- The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) commemorated the 66th anniversary of the creation of the National Liberation Front (FLN) football team with a heartfelt tribute on Saturday. Led by FAF President Mr. Walid Sadi, the federation honored the memory of the courageous players who formed this historic team, highlighting their enduring legacy in Algerian sports.
“In this momentous day, the FAF pays homage to the memory of all these valiant footballers who have left us,” expressed Mr. Walid Sadi on behalf of the federation. He extended prayers to the Almighty Allah for the well-being of the last surviving members, namely Messrs. Rachid Mekhloufi, Dahmane Defnoune, and Mohamed Maouche, acknowledging their pivotal role in shaping Algerian football history.
The FLN team, born exactly 66 years ago on April 13, 1958, remains a symbol of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Comprising thirty-two players who courageously answered the call of their homeland, the FLN team’s legacy transcends sports, representing a pivotal chapter in Algeria’s struggle for independence.
Many of these players were on the brink of participating in the 1958 World Cup with the French team but chose to join the FLN instead. Their decision reflected a commitment to defending Algeria’s cause against French colonialism on the global stage, showcasing the intersection of sport and national liberation.
Despite the passage of time, the memory of the FLN team’s remarkable journey endures. Their tours across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia between 1958 and 1962 left an indelible mark on football history, inspiring generations of Algerians and football enthusiasts worldwide.
As the FAF pays tribute to this iconic team, it honors not only their athletic prowess but also their unwavering dedication to freedom and justice. Among the surviving members—Dahmane Defnoune (Angers), Mohamed Maouche (Reims), and Rachid Mekhloufi (Saint-Etienne)—their resilience serves as a beacon of hope for future generations, reminding us of the enduring spirit of the FLN team and their enduring legacy in Algerian football.
