Algiers, Algeria | August 11th, 2024 — On Sunday, Ahmed Attaf, the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, engaged in a meeting with Saleh Hemma Mohamed Bagda, the Libyan Ambassador to Algeria, at the ambassador’s request. This meeting was convened to address recent developments in Libya, particularly the recent escalation in military deployments across the Western and Southern regions of the country.
The talks focused on the recent uptick in military activities in Libya, which has sparked concerns about the potential for renewed conflict and clashes among rival Libyan factions. According to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Minister Attaf conveyed his profound concern over these developments. He underscored the necessity for all Libyan parties to exercise restraint and wisdom in this volatile period.
During the discussion, Minister Attaf reiterated Algeria’s position, urging Libyan leaders to place the paramount interests of the Libyan people above all else. He emphasized the importance of maintaining and building upon the progress achieved through the UN-led political process, particularly the cessation of hostilities among Libyan factions. Attaf called on all stakeholders to strengthen this progress and use it as a foundation for achieving a lasting and peaceful resolution to the crisis. This, he stressed, is essential for the security and stability of Libya and its neighboring regions.

Attaf also highlighted the critical need for Libyan resources and capabilities to be mobilized effectively to advance the political process. He pointed out the urgency of conducting free, transparent, and regular elections as a means to unify Libyan institutions. The minister warned against the reliance on force and violence, which only exacerbates instability and prolongs the crisis. Instead, he advocated for collective efforts to resolve internal divisions and work towards a unified and stable Libyan state.
