Algiers, November 5, 2023 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad of Algeria, Ahmed Attaf, has embarked on a diplomatic mission to the Republic of Slovenia, following an official invitation from the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon. This visit is part of a joint effort to enhance bilateral relations between Algeria and Slovenia and explore various avenues of cooperation, particularly in the context of opening two embassies in each other’s capitals.
The visit holds strategic importance for both countries, as they seek to foster economic ties and engage in in-depth political discussions on regional and international matters. This includes addressing recent developments in the Middle East, the Sahel-Saharan region, and other global concerns on the United Nations Security Council’s agenda.
In September of the previous year, both foreign ministers attended a ministerial meeting in New York, alongside representatives from the five nations set to join the UN Security Council from January 1st, 2024.
During his visit, Minister Ahmed Attaf is scheduled to meet with his Slovenian counterpart, Tanja Fajon, to discuss various aspects of their nations’ diplomatic relations. Additionally, he will be received by the President of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar, and the President of the National Council of Slovenia.
Furthermore, an essential meeting is set with Slovenia’s Minister of Environment, Climate, and Energy, Bojan Kumer, given Algeria’s crucial role as one of the primary suppliers of natural gas to Slovenia. In November 2022, the Algerian state energy company, Sonatrach, signed a substantial gas purchase and supply contract with the Slovenian company, Geoplin. This agreement entails the delivery of natural gas to Slovenia through the gas pipeline connecting Algeria to Italy, for a three-year period commencing in January 2023.
Under this agreement, Slovenia is set to receive 300 million cubic meters of natural gas annually for the next three years, meeting approximately one-third of the country’s current demand.
Minister Attaf’s visit to Slovenia is expected to strengthen the diplomatic ties between Algeria and Slovenia and explore exciting prospects for cooperation in various sectors. This mission highlights the commitment of both nations to promoting stability, economic growth, and international cooperation.
