Algerian Foreign Minister Discusses Global Developments with UN Deputy Secretary-General

ALGIERS- In the sidelines of the ongoing 10th High-Level Conference on Peace and Security in Africa in Oran, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, met with Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations.
The discussions, as reported by Jean-Pierre Lacroix in a press statement, covered a range of topics, including recent global developments, particularly in the Middle East. The talks also touched upon the proceedings of the Oran process, a focal point of the conference.
Addressing the press, Lacroix emphasized the depth of cooperation between Algeria and the United Nations. He anticipates an escalation of this collaboration, especially “within the framework of Algeria’s presence on the Security Council as a non-permanent member for the 2024/2025 period.”
Turning attention to the Sahel region, the UN diplomat expressed gratitude to Algeria, represented by Ahmed Attaf, for its support in the context of the Minusma’s (UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali) disengagement in Mali. The discussions further delved into the political and security situation in the Sahel-Saharan region, as well as the Western Sahara.
As Algeria plays an increasingly active role in regional and global affairs, these diplomatic engagements underscore its commitment to contributing to peace and stability on the continent and beyond.
