New York, October 26, 2023 – In a powerful and impassioned speech before the United Nations Security Council, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf condemned the “barbaric crimes” committed by the “Zionist entity” against the Palestinian people, particularly in the Gaza Strip. Attaf’s address came during a high-level session convened to discuss the situation in Palestine.

Attaf did not mince words as he criticized the relentless airstrikes on Gaza, describing them as “yet another hideous episode in a series of unprecedented barbaric crimes in the region’s history.” He decried the tragic toll on innocent lives and called for an immediate end to the indiscriminate bombings. He also labeled the forced displacement of Palestinian populations as a form of ethnic cleansing, and he urged the international community to facilitate the unconditional delivery of aid to the people of Gaza.
The Algerian Foreign Minister emphasized that the gross distortion of the facts surrounding the Palestinian issue could be attributed to two main factors: the marginalization of the Palestinian cause and the unjustifiable leniency toward the Israeli occupation. He questioned the disregard for the 87 resolutions passed in connection with the conflict, highlighting the failure of the occupying force to comply with these resolutions.
Regarding the future political solution, Attaf called on the UN Security Council to recognize the undeniable historical truth that “no lasting peace can be achieved when built upon criminality, injustice, oppression, marginalization, exclusion, and discrimination.” He emphasized the imperative of a just and sustainable resolution based on international law.
In response to the Security Council’s inaction, Attaf announced Algeria’s participation in an emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly scheduled for Thursday. The session is convened to address the ongoing Zionist aggression in Gaza and seek international protection for the Palestinian people.
In addition to his powerful speech, Minister Attaf engaged in bilateral discussions with several of his counterparts on the sidelines of the Security Council session. Notably, he met with Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki to discuss recent developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and efforts to halt the barbaric Zionist aggression. The two ministers explored diplomatic initiatives to alleviate the humanitarian consequences of the conflict and deliver unrestricted humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian population.
Furthermore, Minister Attaf held discussions with his counterparts from Brazil, the Netherlands, Gabon, Indonesia, and Libya, during which the situation in Palestine remained a central topic of conversation. The international community’s attention has been rekindled by Minister Attaf’s strong stance on the issue and his diplomatic efforts to address the crisis.
Algeria’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and its immediate humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza have garnered appreciation from the Palestinian leadership and resonated with many in the international community. As the situation in Palestine remains a focal point of global concern, Ahmed Attaf’s resolute stance at the United Nations serves as a powerful call to action for peace and justice in the Middle East.
