Algiers, October 31, 2023 – The Algerian Prime Minister, Mr. Aïmene Benabderrahmane, presided over a government meeting held at the Government Palace on Monday, October 30, 2023. The meeting covered various critical topics and decisions aimed at advancing the nation’s development.
1. Advancing Public Infrastructure
In the domain of public works, the government examined a crucial project presented by the Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, concerning the declaration of public utility for the Bechar-Tindouf-Gara Djebilet railway line. This project, spanning 375 km, is set to become a pivotal part of the mining industry and will promote economic growth and connectivity in the region. It encompasses two key sections, Bechar to kilometer 200 (200 km) and Oum Lassel-Tindouf (175 km).
2. Labor Market Enhancement
The Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Security introduced a project regarding the establishment of the Algerian Nomenclature of Occupations and Jobs (NAME) in the public and private economic sectors. This initiative standardizes job classifications, making it the official reference for workforce requirements. The NAME will streamline employment-related processes, from national job markets to the needs expressed by public and private enterprises, and even foreign companies operating in Algeria.
3. Empowering Local Governance
The Minister of Interior, Local Assemblies, and Territorial Planning reported on the progress made in drafting new legislative texts related to communes, wilayas (provinces), political parties, and associations. These legislative projects align with the broader political and institutional reforms promised by the President, emphasizing legal coherence with the new Constitution. The objective is to reinforce the rule of law, uphold civil liberties, empower local authorities, and enhance the functioning of elected assemblies.
4. Innovative Water Management
The government heard a presentation by the Minister of Hydraulics on the sector’ strategy for utilizing treated wastewater in agricultural and industrial processes. The plan highlights the sector’s goals for reusing purified wastewater in large-scale irrigation, small and medium hydraulics, and the Green Dam initiative. It also includes operational and strategic plans to establish new treatment facilities and expand existing ones, thereby increasing their capacity.
5. Healthcare in the Digital Age
The Minister of Health introduced a comprehensive plan for the digital transformation of the healthcare sector. This initiative aims to improve public governance by digitizing various aspects related to healthcare management. The phased approach includes the digitization of administrative processes, public services, and ensuring interoperability with other government agencies. The digitization of the healthcare sector promises to enhance infrastructure governance, optimize financial expenditures, and provide better healthcare services to patients.
The government’s meeting showcased a commitment to infrastructure development, labor market enhancement, local governance empowerment, innovative water management, and the digitization of healthcare services. These strategic decisions reflect Algeria’s dedication to progress and modernization.
