ALGIERS- The Secretary General of the Ministry of National Defense (MDN), Major General Mohamed Salah Benbicha, welcomed Lieutenant General Luciano Portolano, Secretary General and National Director of Armament of the Italian Ministry of Defense, to the headquarters of the Ministry of National Defense on Thursday.
The two parties engaged in bilateral discussions on areas of mutual interest, with the Director of Military Manufacturing and the Director of External Relations and Cooperation of the Ministry of National Defense and members of the accompanying delegation in attendance.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the two parties exchanged symbolic gifts. It is worth noting that Major General Mohamed Salah Benbicha and Lieutenant General Luciano Portolano co-chaired the 13th Algerian-Italian Joint Commission in December 2022, held at Palazzo Guidoni, the headquarters of the General Secretariat for Defense and the Directorate of Defense Italian Armament.
The meeting focused on the shipbuilding program in the shipyards of Mers El-Kébir in Oran, as well as the helicopter production plant by Leonardo in Aïn-Arnat in the wilaya of Sétif, with series production set to commence this year. Today’s visit follows the audience granted on April 30 by the Italian Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, to the Algerian Ambassador to Rome, Abdelkrim Touahria.
During the meeting, the two parties engaged in a productive discussion regarding opportunities and strategies for enhancing bilateral cooperation in the areas of security and defense. Specifically, they explored ways to strengthen cooperation in the military industry sector through collaborative projects with Italian giants such as the Leonardo company, which specializes in helicopter construction.
The Italian Minister expressed his department’s willingness to extend this type of cooperation to the civil sector and expressed a desire to visit Algeria soon to discuss current and future projects of cooperation and partnership. This reaffirms Italy’s position as a privileged European partner of Algiers, both economically and diplomatically.
This meeting highlights the importance of military diplomacy in strengthening the relationship between Algeria and Italy. The exchange of ideas and collaboration on areas of mutual interest will undoubtedly lead to further cooperation and progress in the future.
