Nairobi, April 8, 2024 – Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, engaged in extensive discussions with his Kenyan counterpart, Mr. Musalia Mudavadi, in Nairobi on Monday, according to a statement from the ministry.

The talks, held within the framework of Attaf’s working visit to the Republic of Kenya, focused on strengthening cooperation and partnership between Algeria and Kenya across various sectors.

According to the statement, the two parties also discussed coordination regarding regional and international developments, particularly issues of mutual concern.

Revitalizing the Institutional Framework of Algerian-Kenyan Relations

During the discussions, both parties agreed to “revitalize the institutional framework of Algerian-Kenyan relations by reactivating the Joint Economic Commission and the Business Council, and enhancing political consultations at all levels.”

Attaf and his Kenyan counterpart also emphasized the priority areas of trade, agriculture, industry, education, training, energy, defense, and security in the roadmap aimed at elevating bilateral cooperation to the desired levels.

The Algerian Foreign Minister stressed the importance of exploring the vast potential of bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, agriculture, industry, education, training, energy, defense, and security.

“For each of these areas, we either have ongoing cooperation programs or promising projects that we are both eager to materialize and implement in the near future,” he affirmed.

A Shared Will to Strengthen the Role of the AU

Peace and security issues in the regions of both countries, namely the Sahel-Saharan region and East Africa, were also central to the Algerian-Kenyan discussions. The parties reaffirmed the convergence of their positions and their shared commitment to enhancing the role of the African Union (AU) in addressing pressing challenges.

Attaf underscored the urgent need for African solutions to African problems, particularly in light of the current near-total paralysis of the UN Security Council. He emphasized that Africa must shape its own destiny through its continental organization, the AU.

Algeria’s Commitment to Defend African Concerns

Attaf expressed Algeria’s commitment to spare no effort in defending African concerns within the Security Council. He highlighted the challenging international environment and stressed the importance of elevating political will and determination to meet the ambitions and aspirations set forth by the continent’s founders.

“In this context, Algeria reaffirms its unwavering commitment to defend African concerns within the Security Council,” Attaf concluded.

The discussions between Attaf and Mudavadi reflect the mutual commitment of Algeria and Kenya to strengthening bilateral ties and addressing regional and global challenges through enhanced cooperation and coordination.
