ALGIERS- In a strategic move guided by the President’s directive, the Algerian Group of Maritime Transport (GATMA) is set to achieve full operational capacity by early 2024. This initiative is part of an extensive reform process that includes the creation of the new company “CNAN El Djazair,” merging “CNAN Nord” and “CNAN Med” to consolidate its maritime capabilities.
The Ministry of Transport reports that GATMA has initiated the refurbishment of its fleet, consisting of 13 vessels. The rehabilitation process involves maintenance and repairs conducted by the National Ship Repair Company (ERENAV). Currently, seven vessels are in service, while the remaining six are undergoing maintenance and repairs. The latter are expected to be back in service by late 2023 or early 2024, achieving 100% operational capacity for the fleet.
The refurbishment aligns with efforts to support economic operators and implement a strategy aimed at boosting freight capacities. Additionally, it positions GATMA to tap into African markets, following the inauguration of commercial maritime lines to Mauritania and Senegal. The company also eyes promising markets in the Gulf countries and East Africa.
In the realm of passenger maritime transport, GATMA has initiated the renovation and rehabilitation of ferry boats such as Tariq Ibn Ziyad and El Djazaïr II, currently undergoing maintenance and repair work. This complements the existing fleet, including the ferry boats Badji Mokhtar 3 and Tassili 2.
To meet the high demand during the upcoming summer season, the national group plans to charter another vessel, aiming for a fleet of five boats. This strategic move is designed to cover European destinations, including Italy, Spain, and France. The schedule for the next season’s crossings is expected to be announced in the first quarter of 2024. The comprehensive overhaul of the maritime transport sector underscores Algeria’s commitment to enhancing its maritime capabilities and expanding its presence in key markets.
