ALGIERS- In a significant diplomatic development, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune met with the Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, at the El-Mouradia Palace. During the audience, President Tebboune conveyed the determination of the Algerian people and government to advance bilateral cooperation with their Mauritanian counterparts.
The meeting, attended by Director of the Presidential Cabinet Boualem Boualem and Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad Lounès Magramane, underscored the deep-rooted historical and familial ties between Algeria and Mauritania.
Minister Merzoug, upon exiting the meeting, highlighted the profound nature of the longstanding relations based on shared blood and history between Algeria and Mauritania. He also conveyed the greetings of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani to President Tebboune, who reciprocated with fraternal greetings for President Ghazouani.
The diplomatic ties between Algeria and Mauritania have witnessed significant progress in recent years, with notable advancements in economic exchanges and collaborative infrastructure projects. One such project is the construction of a crucial road connecting Tindouf to Zouérate, with plans to extend it further to the port city of Nouadhibou. Additionally, two new border crossing points are under construction in the region.
The two nations are exploring the establishment of a free-trade zone and considering the authorization of barter trade at the border. Economic exchanges are expected to increase not only due to Algerian businesses engaging in the Mauritanian market or using Nouakchott as a transit point to West African markets but also in light of heightened tensions between Mauritania and Morocco.
Mauritania recently decided to increase taxes for Moroccan transport trucks passing through its territory from €1600 to €4600, marking a 171% surge. Mauritania serves as a hub for Moroccan products, and the tax hike is likely to reduce traffic at the Guerguerat border crossing. The opening of other border crossing points between Algeria and Mauritania, the promotion of barter trade, and the prospect of defiscalizing the free-trade zone are expected to boost trade between the two nations. Following industrial products, Algerian household appliances, agricultural products, and agro-food items are poised to become more accessible and find entry to the markets of Mauritania’s neighboring countries.
Moreover, the Algerian government has decided to support economic operators by financing permanent stands for their products, facilitating participation in continental fairs, and opening bank branches. Some Algerian operators have expressed interest in establishing industrial units in certain African countries, with Mauritania serving as a pilot experience for Algerian producers. The current circumstances present a favorable opportunity to significantly increase the volume of exchanges between the two countries.
