Algerian Minister Ali Aoun: “Intellectual Property Protection Ensures Growth and Innovation Prosperity”

Algiers- Algeria, May 7, 2024 – Ali Aoun, Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, underscored the vital importance of intellectual property for fostering innovation and driving growth and prosperity. Speaking in Algiers on Monday at a conference organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Algeria (AmCham) and under the auspices of his ministry, Aoun emphasized his ministry’s efforts to cultivate a culture of intellectual property and innovation among professionals.
Dr. Redha Belkacemi, Director of Pharmaceutical Production Promotion at the ministry, delivered Aoun’s remarks, where Aoun highlighted the ministry’s focus on “the fundamental issue of intellectual property rights, which are crucial for fostering research and innovation activities.” He emphasized that “the international context necessitates countries to establish genuine policies for the exploitation and valorization of national innovative potentials.” Aoun mentioned the significance of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) opening its first external office in Africa in Algeria in 2019, which “has enhanced the country’s capacity to address intellectual property issues and strengthen the capacities of national offices, INAPI and ONDA, essential actors in the national innovation ecosystem.”
Elizabeth Moore Aubin, the US Ambassador to Algeria, acknowledged and appreciated “Algeria’s efforts in the field of intellectual property protection,” expressing readiness for cooperation in this area.
Abdelhafid Belmehdi, Director of the Algerian National Institute of Industrial Property (INAPI), highlighted the institution’s efforts in protecting industrial property, a subset of intellectual property. He assured that INAPI has continuously evolved, adapted, and adhered to international conventions to fulfill its main public service mission, which is to protect industrial property and provide information and training for better protection.
Belmehdi also stressed the role of the Technology and Innovation Support Centers (TISCs), with 128 centers nationwide, through which INAPI supports universities and safeguards their projects from plagiarism or scientific theft. He mentioned the recent launch of thematic TISCs, starting with the Eco TISC network in coordination with Constantine 3 University, and the upcoming Pharma TISC focusing on the pharmaceutical sector.
