Algiers, Algeria | December 15th, 2024 — On Thursday, the Minister of Communication, Mr. Mohamed Meziane, presided over a ceremony in Algiers, marking the 62nd anniversary of the establishment of Echaâb newspaper, one of Algeria’s prominent media institutions. The event underscored the critical role of the press in safeguarding national identity, contributing to Algeria’s development, and confronting the threats posed by external forces.

In the presence of several key figures, including Ibrahim Sadouk, Mission Officer at the Presidency of the Republic, and the heads of various media outlets, Meziane delivered a powerful speech highlighting Echaâb‘s unwavering commitment to its core mission of serving the Algerian people. The Minister stated that the ceremony provided an opportunity to reflect on the newspaper’s evolution and its adaptation to modern technologies, emphasizing the institution’s resilience throughout the decades.

“Echaâb is not just a newspaper; it is a symbol of the strength and perseverance of our media,” Meziane declared. “Over its 62-year history, it has amassed a wealth of achievements, promoting human values, advocating for respect for international law, and tirelessly working to preserve Algeria’s identity—an identity that the French colonial occupation sought to erase,” he added.

The Minister also acknowledged the newspaper’s significant contribution to Algeria’s post-independence journey, highlighting its role in documenting the nation’s cultural heritage and supporting its triumphs across various sectors. Echaâb has not only reported on the nation’s accomplishments but has also remained a reliable voice for the concerns of its citizens, enriching the country’s media landscape with professional and responsible journalism.

Emphasizing the broader influence of media, Meziane stressed that the press plays a crucial role in shaping society, politically, socially, and economically. He urged the collective effort of all media professionals to defend Algeria’s image and resist external threats, reinforcing the idea that information is a cornerstone in the ongoing process of nation-building and societal advancement.

“Development and progress are impossible without robust, objective media that fosters professionalism, upholds ethical standards, and meets the expectations of citizens,” he emphasized. “This ensures that the public has access to trustworthy information and services that meet the challenges of today’s world.”

The Minister concluded by reiterating the constitutional guarantee of press freedom, which has become a permanent principle under the 2020 Constitution, as well as the strong support from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for the media sector. These reforms, he noted, have helped rectify past shortcomings and reinforced the media’s role in contributing to the dynamic development and strengthening of Algeria’s institutional framework.

In his address, Mr. Djamel Laalami, CEO of Echaâb, praised the newspaper’s steadfast commitment to defending Algeria’s sacred values. He assured that the newspaper would continue to amplify the voice of the nation and its people, stressing the importance of state support for strengthening the media sector and promoting the development of powerful, responsible journalism.
