ALGIERS- Algerian Minister of Communication, Mohamed Laagab, has expressed concern over the conduct of television channels during the holy month of Ramadan, stating that many have crossed professional and ethical boundaries.

Addressing directors of both public and private television channels, Minister Laagab highlighted that some programs included inappropriate scenes that were not in line with Algerian social norms and the sanctity of Ramadan. He noted that these scenes, which could have been omitted without affecting the storyline, were silent but impactful.

In the same context, Laagab emphasized that channels have the right to criticize society, but it should be done in a proper manner.

Furthermore, Laagab clarified that regulatory measures are not influenced by social media trends but are based on reports from monitoring committees and feedback from citizens.

Regarding the length of advertising breaks, Laagab remarked that “the series now dictate the timing of advertisements, not the other way around.” This indicates a shift in control towards content producers rather than advertisers.

Minister Laagab’s remarks underscore the need for television channels to adhere to professional and ethical standards, especially during sensitive periods like Ramadan. It also highlights the role of regulatory bodies in ensuring responsible broadcasting practices in Algeria.
