ALGIERS- In celebration of the National Press Day, the Ministry of Communication in Algeria hosted a conference titled “Media in the Era of Current Challenges” at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center in Algiers on Saturday. The event, held under the auspices of the President of the Republic, brought together government officials, state dignitaries, leaders of Arab media institutions, and members of the national press.
Minister of Communication, Mohamed Laâgab, addressed the gathering, emphasizing that the celebration is a tribute to the dedication and sacrifices of men and women in the field of journalism. He noted that the event coincides with the ninth edition of the President of the Republic’s Professional Journalist Award.
Laâgab highlighted recent milestones in the sector, including the completion of the President’s commitments to the communication sector. These commitments materialized through the adoption of two bills related to print and electronic media, as well as audiovisual activities. He mentioned the pending establishment of regulatory authorities and the Council of Journalistic Ethics.
The Minister assured attendees that the President’s dedication to the media sector extends beyond these measures, with ongoing efforts to achieve further advancements, such as the ambitious “Dzaïr Media City,” for which the foundation stone was laid on July 5, 2023.
Drawing attention to the evolving global landscape, Laâgab underscored the importance of staying attuned to geopolitical shifts. He cited instances like the media coverage of the Gaza war, where Western media’s handling was criticized for irresponsibility, and the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, which prompted the emergence of new international media practices.
The Minister challenged journalists to address these challenges, urging them to consider their role not only as informants but also as defenders of the oppressed worldwide, in alignment with the principles of the November 1st Declaration.
In a departure from previous celebrations, Laâgab highlighted the significance of this year’s event by incorporating a conference featuring eminent figures from the media industry. He also announced the Ministry’s decision to honor several notable figures from the Algerian press, both current and posthumously.
The celebration served as a platform not only to recognize past achievements but also to reinforce the government’s commitment to fostering a dynamic and responsible media landscape in Algeria. As the media sector continues to evolve, the Ministry of Communication reaffirms its dedication to promoting press freedom, journalistic ethics, and the pivotal role of media in shaping a well-informed society.
