Algerian Minister of Communication Meets Cuban Ambassador to Bolster Strategic Media Partnerships

Algiers, Algeria | January 14th, 2025 —Algeria’s Minister of Communication, Mohamed Meziane, held a high-level meeting on Monday with the Cuban Ambassador to Algeria, Hector Igarza Cabrera, to explore avenues for enhancing bilateral cooperation in the media sector, according to an official statement from the ministry.

The meeting served as a platform to review the current state and future prospects of Algerian-Cuban relations, with both parties emphasizing their commitment to strengthening ties through mutual collaboration. Discussions focused on expanding media partnerships, particularly in the exchange of news content and journalistic expertise.

Highlighting the depth of cooperation, the ministry recalled key agreements signed between the two nations, including the 2023 partnership between the Algeria Press Service (APS) and Cuba’s Prensa Latina. This accord facilitates the exchange of news and media content to promote accurate and diverse reporting between both countries. Additionally, a similar agreement was concluded the same year between Algeria’s public television broadcaster, Établissement Public de Télévision (EPTV), and its Cuban counterpart.

During the discussions, the two officials also addressed the anticipated signing of a cooperation agreement between Algerian Radio and Cuban Radio, further expanding the scope of media collaboration.

Minister Meziane and Ambassador Cabrera reiterated the historical solidarity binding Algeria and Cuba, which dates back to the early 1960s during Algeria’s struggle for independence. Cuba was among the first nations to recognize Algeria’s sovereignty, leading to a lasting alliance rooted in shared principles of anti-colonialism, national sovereignty, and mutual development.

Over the decades, the two nations have collaborated across various sectors, notably in health, education, and diplomacy, with media cooperation emerging as a pivotal domain for cultural exchange and public diplomacy. This renewed engagement in the media field is expected to contribute significantly to mutual understanding and the promotion of both nations’ achievements and perspectives on the global stage.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides expressed a firm commitment to work jointly in reinforcing bilateral relations in the media domain, further consolidating the historical friendship between Algeria and Cuba.
