ALGIERS- In a visit to several national media institutions on the occasion of National Press Day, Algerian Minister of Communications, Mohamed Laagab, extended his warm congratulations to the media community while applauding their relentless efforts. Laagab’s visit served as a testament to the vital role that media plays in Algeria and the wider global landscape, particularly in their coverage of the Gaza conflict.

National Press Day, a significant event, has been temporarily postponed due to the ongoing situation in Palestine. Mohamed Laagab expressed that the celebration would be held at a more suitable time, ensuring it remains a special occasion.
During his visit, Minister Mohamed Laagab did not shy away from critiquing the Western world’s response to the tragic events in the Gaza Strip, especially concerning the unfortunate loss of journalists’ lives. This criticism reflects the Algerian government’ strong stance on ensuring the rights and safety of journalists, not only in Algeria but across the globe.
In a noteworthy development, Minister Laagab acknowledged and appreciated a joint statement released by the publishers of national newspapers. This statement focused on freedom of the press worldwide and openly criticized the Western media’s biased handling of the conflict between the Zionist occupation and the people of Gaza. He particularly commended the unity in the title of the home pages of these newspapers, highlighting that this unified front contributes to amplifying the voices of the people of Gaza on the international stage.
Furthermore, Minister Laagab emphasized the significant role played by public media, urging them to step up their efforts in the face of stiff competition and the rapid dissemination of news. His call included suggestions for in-depth analysis by engaging prominent Algerian and foreign writers, as well as thinking like public institutions. He suggested the creation of a weekly magazine in multiple languages, specializing in news analysis and opinion pieces.
Minister Mohamed Laagab also made a special visit to the “Echorouk News” channel, representing all private channels in Algeria, and extended his heartfelt congratulations to those working in the audiovisual field. He recognized their contributions in addressing both national and international issues, with a specific focus on the heart-wrenching events in Gaza. He highlighted that two draft laws related to audiovisual, electronic, and written journalism will soon be presented to Parliament. These new laws aim to ensure that Algeria’s media landscape remains adaptable and compliant with the evolving media landscape.
Algeria’s Minister of Communications concluded his visit by applauding the Algerian News Agency’s crucial role in covering national and international events. He emphasized the need for the agency to extend its presence both domestically and in major international capitals, particularly in Africa. Additionally, he stressed the importance of comprehensive coverage of economic activities within Algeria and the role of the state in this sector. Minister Mohamed Laagab encouraged news outlets to continually enhance the treatment and marketing of news to stay in sync with global developments.
In sum, Minister Mohamed Laagab’s visit to media institutions on National Press Day served as a reaffirmation of Algeria’s unwavering support for press freedom, journalists’ safety, and the country’s commitment to robust and responsible journalism. The joint statement by national newspapers sends a strong message about the nation’s dedication to defending freedom of the press on the global stage, while also challenging the status quo in international media coverage.
It is worth recalling that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune appointed, last month, Professor Mohamed Laagab as the new Minister of Communications, according to a press release from the Presidency of the Republic.
