Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs: French Far-Right Engages in Hostile Misinformation Campaign Against Algeria

Algiers, Algeria | January 11th, 2025 — The French far-right, described as “vindictive” and “hateful,” has launched a targeted campaign of misinformation against Algeria, attempting to distort realities and rekindle historical tensions for political gain, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs declared on Saturday.

In a strongly worded statement, the Ministry condemned the orchestrated media manipulation led by extremist elements within France, emphasizing their attempt to use Algeria as a scapegoat for internal frustrations. “The revanchist and hateful far-right, along with its identified spokespersons in the French government, are engaged in a calculated campaign of disinformation, seeking to offload their frustrations through historical vendettas against sovereign and independent Algeria,” the statement asserted.

The Ministry refuted any claims that Algeria has engaged in an escalation of tensions, labeling such accusations as fabrications. “Contrary to the narratives pushed by the French far-right and its echo chambers, Algeria is not pursuing any policy of escalation, provocation, or humiliation. Rather, it is these elements who aim to impose a climate of intimidation, threats, and power struggles in Algerian-French relations,” the statement stressed.

Abuse of Power and Arbitrary Expulsion

The Ministry further denounced the arbitrary and abusive expulsion of an Algerian national from France, describing it as a clear attempt to settle historical scores. “The deportation of this Algerian citizen, a resident of France for 36 years with a 15-year residence permit, stable employment, and two children born from his union with a French national, constitutes a blatant abuse of power,” the Ministry highlighted.

It added that the unjustified haste of this expulsion deprived the individual of his right to a fair legal process both in French and European courts. “Depriving this citizen of a legitimate judicial process, where his rights could have been defended, constitutes a breach of fundamental legal safeguards against state overreach,” the statement emphasized.

Violation of the 1974 Algerian-French Consular Convention

The Ministry also underscored France’s breach of the 1974 Algerian-French Consular Convention, citing the failure to inform Algerian authorities of the arrest, detention, or expulsion of the citizen in question. “Despite Algeria’s formal request to provide consular protection, including the right to visitation, the French authorities ignored these obligations,” the Ministry added.

In light of these violations, Algeria reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the citizen’s right to a fair defense against all allegations. “The Algerian decision in this matter is driven by the fundamental need to uphold the rights of its citizens and ensure a just and equitable legal process within French jurisdiction,” the Ministry concluded, reaffirming Algeria’s commitment to justice and the protection of its nationals abroad.
