Algiers, Algeria | May 21, 2024 — In a significant move to bolster the quality of medical care for Algerian patients, the National Social Insurance Fund for Salaried Workers (Cnas) has entered into a partnership with the Italian hospital group “San Donato.” The agreement was formalized in Algiers with a signing ceremony attended by key officials from both nations.
The convention was signed by Nadir Kouadria, Director General of Cnas, and James Loïc Georges, Director of International Development at the San Donato Group. The ceremony was overseen by the Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Security, Fayçal Bentaleb, and the Minister of Health, Abdelhak Saihi.
Enhancing Medical Care
Minister Bentaleb emphasized that this partnership aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of medical care for Algerians both domestically and internationally. He highlighted that this initiative is part of the broader commitments made by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to advance the healthcare system, specifically targeting complex medical procedures such as liver and bone marrow transplants for young children under the age of three.
Bentaleb noted, “Reducing the need to transfer patients abroad is a positive indicator of the development within Algeria’s healthcare sector. This includes advancements in public and private healthcare facilities, medical equipment, and human resources.” He added that the new agreement would “open new avenues for effective patient care, allowing access to high-quality treatments at Italian hospitals.”
Leveraging Expertise and Training
The partnership also aims to leverage the expertise of the San Donato Group by providing training for Algerian doctors and facilitating technology transfers, particularly in pediatric cardiac surgery. Minister Saihi underscored the importance of this collaboration, which is designed to “exchange expertise and strengthen cooperation in the health sector, benefiting from Italian medical experience.” He acknowledged the state’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare services and patient outcomes.
Knowledge Exchange and Capacity Building
Following the signing ceremony, a scientific study day was held focusing on pediatric cardiac and arterial surgery, fostering knowledge exchange between Algerian and Italian medical professionals. This event marked a crucial step in the collaboration, allowing for direct interaction and learning opportunities.
Upcoming Initiatives
The agreement includes a visit by a delegation from the San Donato Group to the Pediatric Medical and Surgical Clinic (CMCI) in Bousmail, Tipasa. This visit aims to assess the clinic’s preparations for conducting joint surgical operations benefiting ten children, in collaboration with an Algerian medical team.
Furthermore, an Italian medical team will visit the specialized clinic for orthopedic surgery and functional rehabilitation for workplace accident victims in Misserghine, Oran. This visit is in preparation for the first surgical operation under the joint program established between the two parties.
This partnership marks a significant step towards improving medical care quality in Algeria, offering advanced treatments and fostering professional growth through international cooperation. The collaboration not only aims to provide high-quality medical services to Algerian patients but also to enhance the skills and capabilities of Algerian medical professionals through training and technology transfer. As a result, this initiative is expected to lead to better healthcare outcomes and reduced dependency on overseas medical treatments, aligning with the broader goals of Algeria’s healthcare reforms.
