Algerian Parliament Condemns French Speaker’s Visit to Occupied Western Sahara

A Stark Violation of International Law and a Colonialist Provocation

Algiers, Algeria | February 27th, 2025 — The Algerian People’s National Assembly (APN) has strongly denounced the recent visit of the Speaker of the French Senate to the occupied territories of Western Sahara, condemning it as a flagrant violation of international law and a manifestation of the far-right’s dangerous drift in France’s political landscape.

 

In an official statement, the APN described the visit as an alarming attempt by reactionary forces within French institutions to lend false legitimacy to Morocco’s illegal occupation of Western Sahara. The Assembly further asserted that this move was an explicit affront to United Nations resolutions and the internationally recognized right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.

“The visit of the Speaker of the French Senate to occupied Western Sahara is a grave deviation fueled by the resurgence of the far-right, which has taken control of French political institutions. It stands in stark contradiction to international legality and the fundamental principles of decolonization enshrined in UN resolutions,” the APN declared.

The parliamentary body underscored that this visit aligns with a broader agenda of neo-colonial revanchism, revealing a disturbing continuity of colonial policies that undermine global efforts to resolve the Sahrawi question in accordance with international law. The APN warned that such actions not only embolden Moroccan occupation but also threaten regional stability by disregarding the historical and legal status of Western Sahara as a non-self-governing territory awaiting decolonization under the supervision of the United Nations.

Algeria’s Parliament reiterated its unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s legitimate right to self-determination, urging the international community to reject all attempts to normalize the Moroccan occupation. It further called upon France to respect its historical responsibility and abandon reactionary maneuvers that jeopardize diplomatic efforts aimed at a just and lasting resolution to the conflict.

This latest episode marks yet another chapter in the ongoing battle between decolonial justice and the remnants of imperialist ambitions—one that Algeria remains firmly committed to confronting on the international stage.
