ALGIERS- Salah Goudjil, Speaker of the Council of the Nation, chaired a coordination meeting on Thursday in preparation for the participation of an inter-chamber parliamentary delegation in the extraordinary session of the 6th legislature of the African Union Parliament from March 20 to 27 in South Africa, according to a statement from the Council.
The coordination meeting, held at the headquarters of the Council of the Nation, was attended by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Lounes Magramane, as well as officials from the General Directorate of Africa within the same ministry, and members of the joint parliamentary delegation set to participate in the extraordinary session, the statement added.
During the coordination meeting, there was “congratulations to the Algerian parliament for the election of Algeria to the position of Vice-President of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for the African group, represented by Ahmed Kharchi, Vice-President of the Council of the Nation, in recognition of the effectiveness of Algerian parliamentary representation and its dedication to voicing the concerns of the continent’s peoples within the largest international parliamentary organization.”
It also emphasized “the importance given by national parliamentary diplomacy to defending the interests of African peoples, within the context of serious international changes and challenges, in line with the will of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to affirm Algeria’s African belonging and destiny, and to strengthen the priority of African depth in its partnerships and policies.”
In this regard, the Speaker of the Council of the Nation highlighted “the importance of striving and redoubling efforts to elevate the methods and working modes of this continental parliamentary body to the level of the aspirations and hopes of African peoples and to distance the African Parliament from any methods that may cloud its agendas, hinder the achievement of its objectives, and disrupt the smooth conduct of its work.”
The parliamentarians participating in this extraordinary session, including representatives from the Algerian Parliament at the African Union Parliament, will seek to “fill vacancies in the Bureau, allocated to the geopolitical groups of Southern Africa, North Africa, and Central Africa, as stipulated by its organic laws,” the statement said.
As a reminder, the Algerian parliamentary delegation is composed of Abdelmadjid Ezzeddine, President of the North Africa Geopolitical Group, Abdelmalek Tacherift, Member of the Audit and Public Accounts Committee of the African Union Parliament, Bahdja El-Amali, President of the Transport, Energy, Industry, Communications, Science, and Technology Committee of the African Union Parliament, Fateh Boutbig, Head of the El-Moustakbal Parliamentary Group in the People’s National Assembly (APN), and Mohamed Sakras, both members of the African Union Parliament.
