Algiers, November 20, 2023- In a significant legislative move, the People’s National Assembly (APN) of Algeria has given the green light to the bills concerning written and electronic press, along with the bill on audiovisual activity. The adoption of these bills marks a crucial step toward reinforcing the legal framework governing the media landscape in the country.

Minister Laagab Presents Landmark Legislation

Last Tuesday, Mohamed Laagab, the Minister of Communication, presented the bills during a plenary session at the APN. The proposed legislation aligns with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing the media sector.

Mr. Laagab emphasized the primary objective of the bills, stating, “The main goal of the bill related to the written and electronic press is to establish a robust legal system, enabling journalists to practice their profession comfortably and ensuring citizens’ access to credible information in the service of the country.”

Addressing Past Shortcomings

The legislation aims to address previous shortcomings in media-related laws, providing a comprehensive legal framework for media practitioners. By defining terms, specifying authorized bodies and individuals engaged in written and electronic press activities, and outlining the associated conditions, the bills seek to rectify historical gaps in media legislation.

Creating a Supportive Environment for Journalists

Minister Laagab underlined that the bills aim to create a supportive environment for journalists, allowing them to carry out their work more effectively. Additionally, the legislation emphasizes the importance of facilitating citizens’ access to trustworthy information, contributing to the overall development of a reliable and transparent media landscape.

Defining Roles and Responsibilities

The bills, now approved by the APN, outline the roles and responsibilities of various entities involved in press and media activities. This includes clear definitions of terms and conditions, ensuring that the regulatory framework is both comprehensive and unambiguous.

Looking Ahead: Building a Robust Media Sector

As Algeria moves forward with these legislative changes, the focus remains on building a robust and dynamic media sector. The comprehensive nature of the bills demonstrates a commitment to fostering a media environment that aligns with international standards while addressing the unique needs and challenges of the Algerian context.

The approval of these bills is seen as a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance press freedom, journalistic practices, and public access to reliable information in Algeria. The country anticipates positive outcomes as these regulations come into effect, shaping a more transparent and accountable media landscape.
