Algiers, Algeria | January 08th, 2025 — The recent remarks made by French President Emmanuel Macron, particularly regarding the Boualem Sansal affair, have sparked widespread condemnation from Algeria’s political class, as well as civil society groups. These statements, viewed as an affront to Algeria’s sovereignty, have exposed not only France’s persistent neo-colonial attitude but also the dire internal crises plaguing the French government.
Flagrant Interference in Algeria’s Internal Affairs
The National Liberation Front (FLN), the dominant political party in Algeria, issued a statement denouncing Macron’s comments as “irresponsible” and “a blatant interference in Algeria’s internal affairs.” The FLN emphasized that such remarks violate the principles of sovereignty and dignity, particularly regarding an ongoing legal matter under Algerian law. “This is a direct attack on our independence and our judicial system, and reflects a double standard on the part of a country that claims to respect international laws but continuously practices a policy of hypocrisy,” the FLN stated.
The FLN further emphasized that Algeria, which paid a heavy price in the blood of millions of martyrs for its freedom, would never yield to external interference. “Our country will remain free, for the Algerian people are born free and will remain free,” the statement asserted. The party condemned Macron’s remarks as “absurd” and “a desperate attempt to tarnish the image of Algeria and its sovereign institutions.” This, it said, is part of a broader, provocative strategy aimed at destabilizing Algeria amid its remarkable progress in various sectors.
A Desperate Attempt to Divert Attention from France’s Internal Struggles
The National Democratic Rally (RND), another major political force in Algeria, also condemned Macron’s statements as “irresponsible” and “unacceptable.” The party noted that these remarks were likely an attempt to divert public attention from the severe political and economic crises unfolding within France. “This confirms that Macron has become hostage to the far-right, colonial lobbies, and Zionist entities that are hostile to Algeria,” the RND declared. The party reiterated its unwavering support for Algeria’s institutions, denouncing the French president’s provocative stance. “These aggressive actions will not affect Algeria, which is advancing under the leadership of our president,” it stated.
The Movement of Society for Peace (MSP) echoed similar sentiments, branding Macron’s comments as a diplomatic affront. The MSP argued that these remarks reflected a colonial mentality that refuses to acknowledge Algeria’s hard-won sovereignty and the international norms of non-interference in the affairs of independent states. The party called on France to cease its repeated provocations, which it viewed as an attempt to export its internal failures onto Algeria. “These actions reveal a deliberate effort to destabilize Algeria and undermine its strategic choices at both regional and international levels,” the MSP said.
Macron’s Colonial Legacy and Attacks on Algeria’s Progress
The El Moustakbel Front political party expressed shock and dismay at Macron’s remarks, accusing the French president of being “trapped in his colonial past and held hostage by the far-right.” The party condemned the anti-Algerian rhetoric coming from certain French political circles, pointing out that it revealed a deep-seated animosity towards a nation that defends human rights. “At a time when Algeria is focusing on promoting citizenship and public freedoms, we are confronted with a provocative, hostile campaign against our country,” the party asserted.
Furthermore, the El Karama Party voiced its regret over Macron’s continued interference in Algeria’s internal affairs, particularly his support for Boualem Sansal, a writer who has publicly questioned Algeria’s territorial integrity. The party reinforced the position of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who had firmly stated that matters involving Sansal were an internal Algerian issue tied to the nation’s core values and principles.
France’s Dark Colonial Past: An Unacceptable Rhetoric
The National Council of University Professors (CNES) also joined in condemning Macron’s remarks, particularly with regard to human rights. The CNES underscored that France, given its colonial history, is not in a position to lecture Algeria on human rights. “For 132 years, France violated the rights of the Algerian people, and the crimes it committed are considered crimes against humanity, which are never subject to statute of limitations,” the CNES stated. The organization also pointed to the ongoing environmental damage caused by France’s nuclear testing in Algeria, particularly in the Reggane region, and called for an end to France’s negligence in addressing the nuclear waste left behind.
A Unified Stand Against External Interference
Across the political spectrum, Algeria’s leaders have united in their condemnation of France’s attempts to meddle in Algeria’s internal affairs. Macron’s statements have been universally rejected as part of a broader effort to undermine Algeria’s hard-earned sovereignty, distract from France’s domestic challenges, and discredit the country’s progress on the international stage. With their steadfast support for national unity and sovereignty, Algeria’s political parties are resolute in their commitment to defend the nation’s dignity and its independent path forward.
As Algeria continues to assert itself as a regional and global player, the French government’s recent actions have only served to strengthen the Algerian resolve. The political class in Algeria has made it clear that no external force—whether through inflammatory rhetoric or covert strategies—will derail the country’s progress or undermine its standing in the international community.
