Algiers, Algeria | February 7th, 2025 — Algerian Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui will travel to Tunisia’s Kef province on Saturday, leading a high-ranking delegation on a mission of historical remembrance and diplomatic consolidation. Mandated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Larbaoui will co-preside, alongside Tunisian Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani, over the official ceremonies commemorating the 67th anniversary of the Sakiet Sidi Youssef Massacre—a harrowing event that remains a symbol of the deep-rooted solidarity between the Algerian and Tunisian peoples in their joint struggle for independence.

A Shared History of Sacrifice and Resistance

The commemoration of the February 8, 1958 tragedy—when French colonial forces indiscriminately bombed the Tunisian town of Sakiet Sidi Youssef, killing dozens of civilians, including women and children—serves as an annual reminder of the sacrifices made in the pursuit of freedom and dignity. This dark chapter in colonial history galvanized regional and international support for the Algerian liberation cause and solidified the unbreakable bond between Algeria and Tunisia.

By honoring the memory of these shared struggles, Larbaoui’s visit underscores Algeria’s unwavering commitment to preserving historical truth and reinforcing the collective memory of resistance against colonial oppression.

Deepening the Algerian-Tunisian Strategic Partnership

Beyond the solemn commemorations, the visit also presents a crucial opportunity to reinforce the long-standing ties between Algiers and Tunis. In line with the strategic vision outlined by Presidents Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Kais Saied, the discussions will focus on bolstering bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, including security, trade, energy, and cross-border development initiatives.

The leaders will explore mechanisms to further institutionalize collaboration through reinforced economic partnerships, improved border security coordination, and the facilitation of trade exchanges. The Algerian-Tunisian partnership has long been anchored in mutual respect, non-interference, and a shared commitment to regional stability.

Prime Minister Larbaoui will be accompanied by a distinguished ministerial delegation, reflecting the significance of this diplomatic mission. Among the officials joining him are:

  • Brahim Merad, Minister of the Interior, Local Assemblies, and Urban Planning
  • Laïd Rebiga, Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders
  • Soufiane Chaib, Secretary of State for the National Community Abroad

This high-level representation signals Algeria’s dedication to further consolidating its ties with Tunisia, not only in remembrance of a painful past but also in the pursuit of a shared vision for a prosperous and stable future.
