ALGIERS- In a recent interview with Al Jazeera, the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, discussed the exemplary relations between Algeria and Qatar, emphasizing the substantial volume of investments and exchanges between the two nations.
Attaf characterized these relations as highly successful, noting that “the most successful relationships are the ones spoken of the least.” He specifically highlighted the Algerian-Qatari relations as among the most successful, considering the considerable volume of Qatari investments in Algeria outside the hydrocarbon sector, which he revealed to be equivalent to, or even surpassing, the combined investments of European countries.
Over the past few years, bilateral relations between Algeria and Qatar have significantly strengthened, reflecting the shared will of the leaders of both countries. Bilateral meetings, contacts, and consultations between the President of the Republic and the Emir of Qatar have played a crucial role in advancing these relations. This sentiment is reciprocated, as the Qatari Ambassador to Algeria, Abdulaziz Ali Al-Naâma, previously stated in January that the relations between Qatar and Algeria serve as a “model of inter-Arab integration,” describing them as a “promising strategic partnership.”
Al-Naâma highlighted the significant achievements, important decisions, and high-level visits that marked the year 2022, confirming the progress made in bilateral relations. Notable Qatari investments in Algeria include the construction of the Algiers-Qatari-German hospital, a $1.2 billion investment by the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) in dairy production, and a $500 million commitment by the Qatari Agricultural and Industrial Development Company (QAID) for cereal production.
Additionally, there have been agreements on investment for the development and management of 73 hotels across Algeria under the Hôtellerie Tourisme et Thermalisme (HTT) group. The extension of activities for the Algerian-Qatari steel company in the Bellara industrial zone and discussions on various sectors such as air and sea transportation, railways, and others are also underway.
Ambassador Abdulaziz Ali Al-Naama reiterated Qatar’s commitment to contributing to Algerian government efforts in environmental diversity protection and conservation projects for endangered animals, citing initiatives like the Houbara Bustard breeding center in the Brézina reserve and gazelle protection.
