Algiers, Algeria | December 3rd, 2024 — Dr. Ibtissem Hamlaoui, President of the Algerian Red Crescent (ARC), hosted Mr. Raouf Mazou, the UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, at the ARC headquarters to enhance field coordination and develop comprehensive humanitarian support programs. This pivotal meeting underscored Algeria’s proactive approach to addressing the multifaceted needs of refugees, with an emphasis on health, psychological support, and social welfare.
During the visit, the delegation toured the ARC office dedicated to addressing the needs of irregular migrants. They examined the extensive efforts made by the Algerian Red Crescent to support this vulnerable population, with a focus on providing healthcare, psychological assistance, and social integration.
Dr. Hamlaoui reiterated the ARC’s steadfast commitment to supporting Sahrawi refugees in Tindouf camps, reaffirming its partnership with the UNHCR to ensure essential care and accompaniment for these communities. This collaborative framework aims to strengthen solidarity and bolster humanitarian responses amidst evolving global challenges.
Mr. Mazou lauded the exceptional efforts of the Algerian Red Crescent and the Algerian government, emphasizing their vital role in the humanitarian field. He expressed full support for initiatives aimed at improving the living conditions of Sahrawi refugees, highlighting Algeria’s leadership in addressing pressing refugee issues with compassion and professionalism.
