Algiers, Algeria | August 26th, 2024 — On Sunday, August 25, 2024, Ibtissem Hamlaoui, President of the Algerian Red Crescent, officially inaugurated a large-scale humanitarian campaign in the municipality of Didouche Mourad, Constantine, aimed at distributing schoolbags and essential supplies to underprivileged students. The launch event was attended by the Mayor of the province, members of the provincial committee, and local Red Crescent representatives, underscoring the collaborative effort to support education across the region.
In an exclusive interview with Ennahar, Hamlaoui revealed the organization’s plans to distribute nearly 4,000 fully equipped schoolbags across various municipalities, selected in collaboration with local authorities to reach those most in need. She emphasized that this initiative forms part of a broader national campaign, with the Red Crescent set to distribute a total of 125,000 schoolbags throughout the country, and potentially more depending on the evolving needs of students. “The schoolbags are already stored in our warehouses, and we have begun the distribution process in 10 provinces. Our priority is to ensure that all schoolbags reach students before the start of the academic year,” Hamlaoui stated.
The initiative extends beyond schoolbags, with an additional 80,000 school smocks being distributed, of which 50,000 were produced by correctional institutions and 3,000 were tailored by the Algerian Red Crescent’s own workshops. The nationwide distribution of all supplies, including some clothing, is expected to be completed by September 12, 2024. The campaign specifically targets low-income families, ensuring that children from disadvantaged backgrounds have the materials they need to begin the school year on equal footing with their peers.
Hamlaoui highlighted the Algerian Red Crescent’s broader humanitarian mission, stating, “Our aim is not only to provide material support but also to alleviate the financial burden on families and foster equal opportunities for all students as they embark on their educational journey.” This campaign exemplifies the organization’s enduring commitment to social welfare, education, and national development, ensuring that children across Algeria are equipped to succeed in the new school year.
