Algerian Red Crescent, Novo Nordisk Partner to Provide Diabetes Medication to Sahrawi Refugee Camps

Algiers, Algeria | December 15th, 2024 — The Algerian Red Crescent, led by its president Dr. Ibtissem Hamlaoui, and Novo Nordisk, represented by its General Manager Mr. Hamza Ben Harkat, have partnered to enhance healthcare support for Sahrawi refugees. The agreement was signed at the Danish Embassy in Algiers, showcasing a commitment to addressing critical health needs in vulnerable communities.

The event was attended by prominent figures, including Her Excellency Katrine From Høyer, the Ambassador of Denmark to Algeria, Ms. Habiba Kherrour, Director of Humanitarian Affairs at Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Farid Bouafouf, Deputy Director of Studies, Research, and Analysis at the Ministry of Health, Mr. Alistair Boulton, the UNHCR Chief in Algeria, and Mr. Bouhabeini Yahia, President of the Sahrawi Red Crescent.

This partnership focuses on delivering anti-diabetic medications to Sahrawi refugee camps, addressing the urgent need for sustainable healthcare solutions. Ambassador Hoyer reaffirmed Denmark’s humanitarian support and stressed the importance of international cooperation in fostering sustainable aid for refugees.

Dr. Hamlaoui highlighted the agreement as a pivotal step in bolstering humanitarian support. She emphasized the necessity of ensuring access to vital medications, stating that these efforts are key to addressing the challenges faced by refugees and ensuring integrated healthcare to improve their overall well-being.

This initiative underscores Algeria’s dedication to working with global partners to provide robust and sustainable support systems for refugees, paving the way for more comprehensive health solutions in the region.
