ALGIERS- Mohamed Boutabba, CEO of the Algerian Energy Company (AEC), announced on Monday in Algiers that the supplementary project for constructing five seawater desalination plants in five coastal provinces, each with a production capacity of 300,000 m3/day, has achieved a completion rate of over 50%.

Speaking on Radio Algérienne’s Channel 1, Boutabba stated that the commissioning of the five stations, scheduled for December 2024 in the provinces of Oran, Tipasa, Boumerdes, Béjaia, and El Tarf, is progressing significantly. Notably, the Fouka station in Tipasa has reached 60% completion, while the completion rates for the other stations range between 52% and 54%.

“With the operation of these five stations, the total seawater desalination capacity will increase from the current 18% to 42%,” he added.

Boutabba also mentioned another ongoing program involving the study for the construction of six seawater desalination plants aimed at enhancing drinking water supply, targeting a desalination rate of 60%. Additionally, there is a project under study for the deployment of mobile desalination units with a production capacity ranging from 2,500 to 2,700 m3/day.

In this context, Boutabba emphasized that seawater desalination is “a vital solution” to address water stress, stating that once these stations come online, national drinking water needs will be met through desalination.

Highlighting the involvement of Algerian companies, Boutabba noted that local firms have been selected to provide equipment for the stations at a 100% rate, with national integration reaching 30% to 40% in the construction of these facilities.

Asserting the promising potential of seawater desalination, Boutabba called for facilitating access for companies and investors in this field to further boost its development.

Boutabba underscored the importance of training in seawater desalination investment, advocating for the introduction of standards and scientific modules on cutting-edge techniques and practical training. These standards would be integrated into Algerian universities in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, as well as into vocational training centers in coordination with the Ministry of Vocational Training and Education.
