Algerian Security Forces Foil Major Terror Plot: Arrest of “MAK” Operative Uncovers Smuggling of Firearms

Algiers, Algeria | August 14th, 2024 —  On August 4th, 2024, a meticulously coordinated counterterrorism operation conducted by Algeria’s combined security services culminated in the arrest of an individual associated with the terrorist organization “MAK” at the port of Bejaïa. The detainee, identified as Zaïdi Moussa, was intercepted in possession of a significant cache of firearms and ammunition, which he attempted to smuggle into the country from the port of Marseille, France. This arrest, which also involved his wife, has revealed an intricate plot with far-reaching implications for national security.

According to an official communiqué released by the Ministry of National Defense (MDN) on Wednesday, the apprehension of Zaïdi Moussa was the result of ongoing efforts by Algerian security forces to combat terrorism and organized crime in all its manifestations. During the operation, authorities uncovered a well-concealed arsenal within the couple’s vehicle, which included various firearms, ammunition, a substantial amount of foreign currency, and other items intended for covert entry into Algeria.

In the course of the subsequent investigation, Zaïdi Moussa confessed to his active involvement with the “MAK,” a terrorist group known for its anti-Algerian activities. The suspect further disclosed that the seized weapons were procured by a network operating within French territory, with the explicit objective of arming “MAK” sleeper cells within Algeria. These cells, according to the investigation, were poised to execute a series of terrorist acts as part of a broader agenda orchestrated by foreign intelligence agencies hostile to Algeria. The ultimate goal of this campaign was to disrupt the upcoming presidential elections by instigating widespread unrest and insecurity.

The MDN communiqué highlighted that the swift and decisive action by Algerian security forces did not end with the arrest of Zaïdi Moussa. Through the effective exploitation of intelligence gathered during the operation, security personnel were able to apprehend an additional 19 members of the same terrorist network. Furthermore, a subsequent raid on a clandestine weapons repair workshop near the city of Bejaïa led to the seizure of a considerable stockpile of arms.

In total, the operation resulted in the arrest of 21 individuals, who have since been presented to the competent judicial authorities. The array of weapons seized during the operation is extensive, including 46 firearms of various calibers, a significant quantity of ammunition, 12 pairs of binoculars, 10 bladed weapons, a range of firearm components, and equipment for manufacturing ammunition. Additional items confiscated included a GPS device, computers, mobile phones, and various other objects linked to the group’s activities.

This operation is a testament to the vigilance and determination of Algeria’s security services in thwarting the efforts of terrorist organizations and their foreign backers, who continue to target the stability and security of the nation. The success of this operation underscores the critical importance of maintaining a robust counterterrorism strategy to protect Algeria from both domestic and external threats.
