ALGIERS- The Council of the Nation, in a plenary session on Tuesday, adopted a new law concerning the film industry, marking a significant milestone in Algeria’s cultural and artistic evolution.

Following the vote, Minister of Culture Soraya Mouloudji heralded the law as ushering Algeria into a “new era of its cultural and artistic history.” She emphasized the pivotal role of cinema in shaping, valuing, and developing Algerian cultural identity, asserting that the law would spearhead a major cinematic revival to address the nation’s significant challenges.

Mouloudji underscored that the legislation aligns with President’s vision for sustainable development and ensuring dignified lives for citizens, particularly by reviving cultural and cinematic industries and fostering an environment conducive to producers’ creativity and investment.

Elevating Algeria’s Status in Film Production:

Central to the law’s objectives is positioning Algeria as a regional and international powerhouse in film production. This initiative is part of the President’s commitment to revitalizing cultural and cinematic sectors, encouraging investment, and nurturing indigenous talent.

Engagement and Collaboration:

Mouloudji highlighted the collaborative process involving filmmakers, professionals, and stakeholders in crafting the legislation, emphasizing their integral role in its enrichment and development. The resulting regulatory framework is comprehensive and integrated, designed to adapt to global technological shifts while aligning with Algeria’s economic priorities.

Adapting to Technological Advancements:

The Council’s Culture, Information, Youth, and Tourism Committee commended the legislation for enabling the film industry to adapt to evolving digital and technological landscapes. It acknowledged the law’s emphasis on establishing tailored mechanisms aligned with the country’s economic choices and meeting industry professionals’ aspirations.

Implementation and Future Prospects:

While celebrating the law’s precision in delineating essential cinematic activities and upholding constitutional principles, the Committee urged expedited enactment of associated regulations. Additionally, it called for synergies between the film industry and start-ups, alongside the establishment of an interest-free financing fund to incentivize youth participation in film production and enrich Algeria’s cinematic landscape.

In summary, Algeria’s adoption of this legislation underscores its commitment to cultural development, economic diversification, and international engagement in the film industry, signaling a promising future for Algerian cinema on both regional and global stages.
