Algerian Senate Condemns France’s Endorsement of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan: “An Uncertain Venture with Colonial Overtones”

Algiers, Algeria | July 29th, 2024 — In a pointed denunciation of France’s endorsement of Morocco’s so-called autonomy plan for Western Sahara, the Algerian Senate, led by Salah Goudjil, has expressed deep indignation and concern. The Senate condemns the French government’s stance as “a distortion and adventurism with uncertain consequences,” accusing France of perpetuating colonial ideology and indulging in a “shameful” nostalgia for its colonial past.

The Senate’s communiqué portrays France’s decision as a profound misjudgment and a failure in addressing the Western Sahara issue, which it views as a moral affront to the longstanding international efforts to eradicate colonialism. The statement criticizes France’s alignment with Moroccan interests as an unprecedented diplomatic collusion that overrides established conventions and violates global diplomatic norms. The communiqué highlights France’s “blatant denial” of international resolutions and advisory opinions, accusing it of “explicitly approving” and “legitimizing” Morocco’s occupation of a founding member state of the African Union.

Furthermore, the Senate charges France with reneging on its duties as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, noting that its decision undermines international legitimacy and the implementation of the 1991 agreement in accordance with UN resolutions and international law. The communiqué argues that France’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara represents an ineffective attempt to subvert international and regional efforts aimed at enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their legitimate right to self-determination. This decision, the Senate asserts, reflects a desperate endeavor at neocolonialism aimed at legitimizing colonial ideologies rejected by the majority of the international community.

The Senate further characterizes France’s actions as a stark manifestation of entrenched colonial ideology, serving as a painful reminder of historical injustices and crimes against humanity committed in Algeria, Africa, and globally. The communiqué reaffirms Algeria’s steadfast opposition to colonialism in all its forms, distinguishing between the Moroccan people and the “occupying Makhzen regime.” It condemns the resurgence of destructive colonialism, particularly as supported by the Franco-Moroccan-Zionist coalition, which undermines the legitimate rights of both the Sahrawi and Palestinian peoples.

In its appeal, the Senate calls upon the French Parliament, which has previously voiced concerns over human rights issues in North Africa, to take a decisive stand on this matter. It urges the French Parliament to address France’s entrenched colonial tendencies and compel the government to reassess its position and rectify its narrow international and regional perspective. The communiqué reaffirms Algeria’s consistent stance, as articulated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in support of just causes, including the Western Sahara issue. It concludes by reiterating Algeria’s commitment to the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence, and their right to defend their homeland and resources through legitimate means guaranteed by international law.
