Algiers, Algeria | August 19th, 2024 —  In a recent interview with Algerian television, Salah Goudjil, Speaker of the Upper House, paid tribute to Algeria’s revolutionary history while urging citizens to actively participate in the upcoming presidential elections on September 7.

The commemorative broadcast, hosted by journalist Samiha Siad, featured Goudjil’s impassioned reflection on the significance of August 20, which President Abdelmadjid Tebboune officially designated as “Mujahid Day” in recognition of the North Constantine Offensive and the Soummam Congress. These anniversaries, which are emblematic of Algeria’s protracted struggle against French colonial rule, continue to serve as powerful reminders of the sacrifices made in the pursuit of national independence.

Goudjil emphasized the monumental contributions of the National Liberation Front (FLN) and the National Liberation Army (ALN), whose efforts on both the domestic and international fronts proved decisive in the fight for Algeria’s sovereignty. He noted that these revolutionary efforts continue to echo through the nation’s consciousness, particularly as Algeria navigates contemporary challenges, including the rising tide of far-right extremism in France.

He also expressed deep admiration for the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP), which he described as the worthy heir of the National Liberation Army. According to Goudjil, the ANP remains a steadfast protector of Algeria’s borders and an enduring symbol of national unity. He underscored the army’s vital role in safeguarding Algeria against external threats, particularly during these times of heightened regional instability.

Furthermore, Goudjil praised the significant strides made under President Tebboune’s leadership. He singled out the President’s steadfast commitment to fulfilling the 54 promises he made upon assuming office— a number symbolically tied to the revolution of 1954— and commended his efforts to modernize and transform Algeria. According to Goudjil, these achievements have positioned the nation on a path toward renewed strength and development.

Looking ahead to the forthcoming presidential elections, Goudjil appealed to the Algerian people to exercise their civic responsibility by participating in large numbers. He emphasized that a robust voter turnout would serve as a powerful demonstration of Algeria’s unity and determination to maintain its sovereign trajectory, reminding the electorate that the Algerian people have always risen to the occasion when called upon by the nation.

In addition to addressing domestic matters, Goudjil reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast position on the issue of Western Sahara, the last remaining colony in Africa. He pointed out that the matter of Western Sahara remains under the jurisdiction of the United Nations General Assembly and took a firm stance against Morocco’s continued attempts to assert control over the region. Goudjil emphasized that Algeria remains unwavering in its support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, a principle enshrined in international law.

The complete interview with Salah Goudjil will air on Monday at 9 PM on Algerian News Channel 3 and Parliament Channel. It will be re-broadcast on Tuesday, August 20, on Algeria’s Channel 1 and Channel 8 (Memory).
