Algerian Sovereignty Under Attack: Ennahda Denounces France’s Meddling, Sansal’s Actions

Algiers, Algeria | December 3rd, 2024 —The Algerian political movement Ennahda has issued a powerful condemnation of the deliberate provocations by the French far-right and actions by the controversial writer Boualem Sansal, asserting that such behaviors are a blatant attack on Algeria’s sovereignty rather than a matter of free expression.

In a strongly worded statement released by its Secretary-General, Mohamed Douibi, Ennahda declared that Sansal’s recent activities are part of a long-standing agenda aimed at undermining Algeria’s national interests, distorting its heroic history, and tarnishing the legacy of its revolutionary struggle. The statement accused Sansal of aligning himself with anti-Algerian forces, noting that his conduct “has nothing to do with freedom of speech” but instead reflects a deeper hostility towards Algeria’s sovereignty and identity.

France’s Role and European Complicity

The movement criticized France for escalating pressure through political and media channels in defense of Sansal. Ennahda described these efforts as a calculated strategy to interfere in Algeria’s internal affairs and exert neo-colonial influence over the country. Moreover, the statement expressed shock at the European Parliament’s apparent alignment with the French position, calling it an unacceptable intrusion into Algeria’s domestic matters.

“France continues to demonstrate its inability to shed its colonial mindset, resorting to economic and political exploitation to destabilize Algeria,” the statement read. Ennahda urged European partners to foster relations based on mutual respect and shared interests rather than supporting France’s hegemonic ambitions.

A Call for National Unity and Vigilance

Ennahda called upon Algerian institutions and citizens to remain vigilant against both external meddling and internal betrayal. It emphasized that individuals holding Algerian citizenship who act against the nation’s interests must be held accountable under the country’s judicial system, regardless of any external pressure. The movement stressed that the era of colonialist hierarchies is over, reiterating that all citizens are equal in the independent Algeria.

The statement concluded with a plea to Algeria’s government and patriotic figures to protect state institutions from infiltrators working against national interests. Ennahda also demanded that judicial and security bodies exercise their constitutional powers with professionalism and independence to safeguard Algeria’s sovereignty.
