Algerian Speaker Brahim Boughali Emphasizes Importance of Historical Memory, National Unity

Algiers- Algeria, May 9, 2024 – Brahim Boughali, Speaker of the People’s National Assembly (APN), affirmed, on Wednesday in Algiers, that the importance of reading history lies in strengthening national cohesion, rebuilding the nation, and leveraging its strengths to occupy the rightful place among nations.
Speaking at the premiere of the documentary film on the life of Cheikh Larbi Tebessi, on the occasion of the National Memory Day, coinciding with the 79th anniversary of the massacres of May 8, 1945, Mr. Boughali emphasized that the screening of this film “allows us to better understand the relevance of the path taken by Cheikh Larbi Tebessi, may he rest in peace, and his colleagues in the Association of Algerian Muslim Scholars (AOMA), and to conclude the need to follow the same path and adhere to it until we achieve our goal, that of building a new, strong, and respected Algeria.”
Questioning the importance of reading history, the Speaker of the APN highlighted that it lies in strengthening national cohesion, rebuilding the nation, and leveraging its strengths to occupy the rightful place among nations and peoples.
Regarding the content of the film, Mr. Boughali emphasized that “it is part of the approach to preserving our history,” describing the choice of this historical figure as “relevant,” as Cheikh Larbi Tebessi left an “exceptional mark on the history of the reformist movement led by AOMA, through his active participation in preparing revolutionaries for the outbreak of the Glorious Revolution.”
The film provides an overview of “this exceptional man who led a reformist campaign at a very sensitive time in Algerian history,” he said, adding that “the place and achievements of this revolutionary played an important role in shaping the personality of contemporary Algerians and contributed to forming the mujahideen from the outset.”
Referring to the massacres of May 8, 1945, Mr. Boughali explained that these events “succeeded each other terribly for Algerians, and history remembers the unprecedented cruelty with which the French occupier treated the legitimate demands of a defenseless people, tarnishing the history of this destroyer.” He also stressed that “it is no coincidence that we talk about the photo and its role in recording these crucial events in our national history,” insisting on “the importance of efforts to strengthen our historical documents with visual elements to give more vitality and credibility to our national archives.”
“It is sad and shameful to see humanity once again living at the pace of similar crimes as atrocious as those taking place in Palestine, in a world that claims to be civilized and progressive, crimes committed against our Palestinian brothers by the Zionist entity, which continues the genocide by invading the city of Rafah where the Gazans have taken refuge,” Mr. Boughali recalled.
In this regard, the Speaker of the APN emphasized that this “occurs in the face of a deafening silence, despite the rejection by human conscience and the revolt of freedom-loving people around the world, especially university students who have proven that Humanity is not yet dead despite all means of concealment, disinformation, and distortion.”
Finally, Mr. Boughali called for “transmitting these events, these images, and these noble values to future generations, so that they serve as the foundation for our national unity and the unity of our glorious people with all its components, a unity that escapes all hateful conspirators, a unity between a people and its vigilant army, the worthy heir of the National Liberation Army that has given the most beautiful examples of sacrifice and dedication.”
