Algiers, Algeria | October 7th, 2024 — In a scathing critique of the ongoing Zionist aggression against Gaza, Salah Goudjil, Speaker of the Algerian Council of the Nation, has labeled the brutal campaign a “catastrophe” not only for global conscience but also for international humanitarian law, as well as for peace and security across the globe.

Marking the first anniversary of the violent assaults on Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, Goudjil highlighted the gravity of the situation in an interview with the daily El-Chaab. Reflecting on the past year of war, he stated, “The collective memory of the world will remember the unbridled Zionist frenzy and its crimes against humanity—first in October 2023 against the Palestinian people and now in October 2024 against the Lebanese people.”

A Year of Tragedy

Goudjil described the past year as “deeply painful,” lamenting the human suffering that has unfolded. “It was a year marked by a great Nakba, not only affecting the resilient Palestinian people but also shattering the credibility of the global community. Values have been desecrated, and regional and international laws and institutions have been deeply humiliated,” he asserted.

The atrocities committed in Gaza, including mass killings, torture, forced displacement, famine, and the systematic destruction of land, were stark reminders of the suffering endured by Palestinians. Goudjil also condemned the international community’s tepid response to the violence, describing it as a “shocking indifference” and denouncing the “regional and international overreactions that either turned a blind eye or, worse, encouraged this barbarity through racist rhetoric.”

Palestinian Cause: A National Priority

Goudjil emphasized that Algeria remains unwavering in its support for the Palestinian cause, describing it as both a national and international duty. He praised the courage of the Palestinian people in their resistance against the occupation, as well as the role of “free men around the world” who have, for the first time, brought the Zionist occupation before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). He singled out South Africa’s historic initiative in filing a lawsuit against the Zionist entity at the ICJ as a landmark moment in global solidarity.

Referring to Algeria’s steadfast official and popular stance in favor of Palestine, Goudjil reaffirmed the position articulated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has repeatedly declared, “The Palestinian cause is a national cause that we will never abandon, and we will stand by Palestine, whether it is right or wrong.” He underscored that this unified stance, shared between the Algerian people and their leadership, exemplifies Algeria’s unwavering commitment to the Palestinian struggle for justice.

Echoing the Voice of the Free

Goudjil also praised President Tebboune’s powerful and clear declarations on the Palestinian cause, particularly in light of the recent escalation of violence. “The President’s statements have resonated internationally and reflect the resurgence of Algeria’s diplomatic influence in regional and global forums,” he remarked. Goudjil noted that these statements reflect the positions of all the “free men of the world” and speak with a boldness that many global leaders no longer possess.

Algeria’s Role in Defending Palestinian Rights

The Council of the Nation, according to Goudjil, has played an active role in advocating for Palestinian rights on the international stage. “We have worked tirelessly through every parliamentary platform, both regional and international, to amplify the voice of the Palestinian people, provide them with aid, and push for an immediate ceasefire,” he stated. Goudjil added that the Council of the Nation has consistently embodied Algeria’s position in favor of a peaceful resolution and the two-state solution, while condemning the repressive policies of the Zionist regime.

He also highlighted the Council’s efforts to engage in parliamentary diplomacy, raising the issue of Palestine in bilateral meetings and multilateral forums, reinforcing Algeria’s commitment to a just resolution of the conflict.

Algeria’s Call for a Two-State Solution

Reiterating Algeria’s long-standing position on the Zionist-Palestinian conflict, Goudjil stressed that the country has always advocated for a two-state solution and the establishment of lasting peace in the region. He called on world parliaments to support Algeria’s position as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, aiming to secure a permanent seat for Palestine at the United Nations. “Algeria’s stance, both in words and in action, has always been consistent, and the Council of the Nation aligns with this formidable foreign policy led by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune,” he added.

In his concluding remarks, Goudjil reaffirmed Algeria’s refusal to participate in any initiative that fails to recognize the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state. “The colonization in Palestine and Western Sahara will inevitably end. These are the lessons of history—lessons believed by the wise and denied by the foolish,” he declared.

With its firm stance and diplomatic efforts, Algeria continues to play a leading role in defending the Palestinian cause, reflecting its historical commitment to justice and international law.
