Algerian Speaker Goudjil Meets with Italian Ambassador in Algiers: Exchange of Views on Regional, International Situation

Algiers- Algeria, May 13, 2024 – Salah Goudjil, Speaker of the Council of the Nation, welcomed Alberto Cutillo, the Ambassador of the Italian Republic to Algeria, during a courtesy visit on Sunday, as per a statement from the Council.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the two parties to exchange views on the current regional and international situation and review the robust relations between Algeria and Italy, framed by promising agreements under the auspices of Presidents Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Sergio Mattarella.
Goudjil praised the positive dynamics of relations between Algeria and Italy, describing them as strong Arab-European relations in the Mediterranean basin, characterized by respect, understanding, continuity, and genuine friendship.
He expressed pride in the high-quality strategic partnership between the two countries, emphasizing the common Mediterranean cultural heritage. Goudjil called for promoting economic cooperation, particularly in the field of small and medium-sized enterprises, and exploring opportunities offered by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to expand trade exchanges.
Recalling the contribution of Italian media during Algeria’s liberation war, Goudjil highlighted the continuation of this relationship, from revolutionary Algeria to the new Algeria being built under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Cutillo expressed his joy at his appointment in Algeria, emphasizing its significance as a key partner of Italy. He highlighted the favorable context for cooperation and fruitful economic partnership, especially within the framework of the ‘Mattei Plan’ aimed at promoting cooperation relations with African countries. Cutillo also discussed Italy’s positions on regional and international issues, supporting negotiated and peaceful solutions to conflicts.
The parties also discussed the situation in Palestine, with Goudjil reaffirming Algeria’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to establish their independent state with Al Quds as its capital. He emphasized the need to intensify efforts, particularly in the Mediterranean region, to stop the genocide in Palestine and review international laws’ mechanisms.
Both parties agreed on the importance of elevating relations between Algeria and Italy, particularly in the parliamentary aspect. They discussed the exchange of visits and expertise between representatives of both countries, the signing of cooperation agreements, and the strengthening of official diplomacy through active parliamentary engagement between the Council of the Nation and the Italian Senate.
