Algerian State Guarantees Repatriation of Deceased Nationals Abroad

Algiers, April 24, 2024 – The Algerian state has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the repatriation of the mortal remains of Algerians who pass away abroad, with new provisions introduced in the Finance Law for the year 2023. These provisions, outlined in Article 72 of the Finance Law, represent a significant expansion of coverage compared to previous regulations.

The amendments introduced in Article 72 build upon the provisions of the supplementary Finance Law of 2021, particularly amending Article 165, which previously restricted coverage to “needy individuals or those whose families could not afford the repatriation costs.” This significant update in the law is designed to ensure that all Algerian nationals, regardless of their financial situation, are covered for repatriation costs.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad have provided detailed clarification regarding these new provisions. According to official sources, the coverage extends to all Algerian nationals, whether residents or non-residents, including those in irregular situations, who pass away outside the national territory. This coverage encompasses all necessary expenses, including land transportation in the country of death, air transportation to Algeria, as well as costs associated with preliminary procedures such as mortuary care, casket preparation, administrative fees, and taxes.

These clarifications come in response to certain statements made following the publication of various press articles and media appearances, which may have caused confusion among Algerian nationals abroad. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad seek to ensure clarity and transparency regarding the coverage provided by the Algerian state.

It is emphasized that these measures are part of ongoing efforts to address the concerns of the national community abroad. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has instructed relevant authorities to prioritize the welfare of Algerian nationals, including providing assistance in repatriating deceased individuals from abroad.

In light of these developments, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad reiterate the Algerian state’s commitment to covering the repatriation costs of deceased Algerian nationals from abroad, regardless of their financial circumstances. This demonstrates the government’s dedication to supporting its citizens and ensuring their dignity and respect in both life and death.
